Crow hunt

With the talks of nest snatchers and what not, crows keep coming up. Anyone interested in a public land crow bashing? I used to kill a bunch every year because it's fun with a caller. Way more fun to me than shooting coyotes. This is done during the day and you can see and hear them coming from way off.

When I was younger I was always told a crows foot would scare off evil, so I always made sure it was the first thing of the season I killed, lol. Like my season would damned if I didn't do this. Since the wife got chickens she made me stop shooting them. I never really thought I was doing much beyond my own personally enjoyment and helping keep the balance. Not that I give a shit about turkeys, but it's an excuse to start blasting crows again for me!

With enough interest, I can do some scouting and this might be something we do at the summer shoot while the loafers go golfing. Or anytime really. This also goes for all areas of the state. Start a contest for the 4 corners of the state! Something, anything if it helps. I'm also tired of reading the complaints without anyone doing anything to help, so let's help!

I too have enjoyed putting a smack-down on a murder of crows. When I was younger, any time I saw em ganging up on a red tail hawk or owl, I’d go grab a 12 gage and try to help the owl or hawk. Over time the local crows learned and watched out for the “guy with the gun”.

There’s not as many around these days. But it’s probably due to other things than me… lol

I'm in David! Think I pitched my decoys. Took coffee creamer plastic bottles warped them in electric tape with a clothes pen on the bottom. Three or four of them worked great in some low limbs when they responded to the calling and were fun to make with very little money in them!

Fawn in distress this time of year usually creates some sort of reaction from something. Love it!

Edit: Yeah, I see they do raid nests. They do eat grubs though, which I have a ton of. Those dang moles are softening my yard something awful chasing after them!

Turkeys eat grubs too and taste better than a crow. Not by much, but a little.

So by killing crows, turkeys should come back? If thats the case I'll start taking out crows! Just got my 22lr all buttoned up and I'm sighting it in later.

It is very easy to hunt them. Until they learn they are being hunted. Lol

We used to put out an owl decoy and a bunch of crow decoys then hide in a hedgerow dressed in all camo. We’d start hammering away on the crow calls and if there’s a crow within earshot, they’ll come looking for a fight. I’m sure there’s a lot of stuff on YouTube about crow fighting calls. They would get so wound up dive bombing the owl decoy that we would have time to reload our shotguns and shoot again….sometimes they’d allow us a third volley. We’d always take one of the dead crows with us on our next setup and place it at the foot of the owl decoy. They would really get them fired up. Some days we would kill a couple dozen….our best day was a couple dozen on one sit….when we started calling, they rose up from a cornfield nearby and the sky turned black. Must’ve been 300 crows in that flock. They were pissed and we reloaded twice before they flew out of range. I couldn’t believe they were attacking as we were shooting and they just ignored the sound of the shotgun blasts. If you’ve never done it, I suggest trying it at least once, preferably with someone who’s done it before. It’s a good time!

It is amazing how reactive they are. Who would of ever thought you could get a rush off shooting crows? But you do! It isn't like other hunting where you wait either. It happens right away or it doesn't happen. Just move and do it again.

I forgot how much fun it was. Some of those guys really stacked them up. I've had some good hunts where I've dropped 20+, but some of those videos are nuts! 50-250 crows in a hunt. That is crazy. We don't have those kind of numbers of birds. Also seems like more people are eating them now. I'm sure I'd try it of someone else cleaned and cooked it. That purple meat and witchcraft thoughts freak me out.

I’ve eaten enough crow in my life, I’m not going to literally eat it

I don't think crows should literally be eaten. I know turkey vultures/buzzards can't be eaten because they eat rotten meat. I would think the same applies to crows!

There was a guy on this site several years ago who would kill and eat them.

I've seen some huge numbers fly over during the fall and spring up near Mansfield. Migration route I would guess. So many you couldn't keep count and for as far as you can see.
