Bawana,
After reading the preceding quote, the main problem that I have with the response, is that I still don't know what position you are representing. Since you state that you are a member of "multiple boards/commissions" you clearly understand that a board member has a fiduciary responsibility to represent the interests of the "group" that they serve. In this instance, it is a little "sticky" compared to Legal Boards in that for a public/private company that has shareholders, the position is voted on by the group that they represent (which is clearly not the case in this instance). With all that said, I think that your responsibility is a little more than you cover in your preceding response......your job is to represent our interests. If your job is to not "steer anyone's view in any particular direction", then what is it? I too have been involved in many "legal boards" and I have held the belief that it was my fiduciary responsibility to be the "voice" of the stakeholders that I represent "in the room", and unfortunately many times this included steering other peoples opinion in a particular direction that was different than those that I represented. Anything less would have been a waste of my time and a disserve to those that I represented.

Jimbo63

My job will be to steer members of the stakeholders group to our points of view. I do not intend on trying to influence anyone on these sites. That is why I'm trying to get as many opinions as possible, not necessarily the same persons opinion 20 different times.

What's that, over 3x more active?

For this individual topic. That's probably because we have talked about it on this site for the past 8 years until we're blue in the face and most don't really see this stakeholder thing as any more than a big do nothing machine.
But yet you've contributed 55 of the 440 posts about this do nothing machine????????

This is from your own site, a few pages ago. Since you've been beating this dead horse for about 9 years everyone should know your position, yet there is massive differences on this site and others as to what the main problems are facing us today. Jack you'll say low numbers, Others scream about access, others about the state of our public grounds, and some are more concerned about diseases. I've tried and will continue to follow this site as well as several others and several facebook pages to try to get a feel for where each issue or concern stands among the masses.

Brent, it's not a simple solution, therefore you should expect a variance in the sticking points for each member. We all have unique circumstances that form our perspectives, so there's no way that after 8 years of debate, we'll land on one single pain point to represent the entire constituency here.

I have said very little within this thread because I've said it all before and I'm simply too busy to give two shits about this dog and pony show you're a part of. No disrespect to you because I do believe you are involved because you genuinely care about the future of our deer herd and want to do your part to help. So not to shoot the messenger, but I'm not at all impressed by the collective effort of this "stakeholder" boondoggle you're representing. If I felt conversing with you on this topic by posting here would actually help, I do it. But my daddy taught me not to piss in to the wind...

Sounds like you have your answers then. Population, access, public land, and diseases. You can head back and tell them everything they've heard a 10,000 times before from hunters and ignored as they decimated our deer population for corporate profit. And since you admittedly have no responsibility to actually push those issues for us, or give us any type of information on who is pushing those issues for us, and who isn't, then it seems like your work here is done.

It's just a simple matter of the younger generation there is less interest in hunting. The older generation either can't hunt due to health reasons or aren't around any more to hunt.
IMHO the hunter numbers will continue to drop in the future.

This.

I don't have any reason to believe putting my opinions down on this one thread and you taking my concerns back are going to get any further then it already has. Until the State starts seeing negative dollar numbers from hunting then nothing will change. They didn't do anything about game birds yet have they? Heck no. Want to know why? That's because the deer hunting increased and so it didn't make any difference that fewer people was afield hunting quail or pheasant. Those same outdoorsman/women also hunted deer. Now that the deer numbers are down across the state less and less people are hunting because we are running out of things to hunt across the board. With the over abundance of red-tailed hawks and now add in the increase in bald eagles and toss in coyote, and the returning bobcat I have noticed a huge decline in rabbits over the past 10 years. Again, not deer so nobody says anything because those hunters also hunt deer so it's no biggie, they will still hunt. I'm here to tell you, the lack of hunter participation isn't because the younger generation is lazy and only want to play electronic games, it's because guys like me get tired of staring at leaves and telling my kids it's a great time and you will see lots of cool things out there. Truth is, I spend more time thinking of other things while on stand then hunting. As a kid I couldn't wait to get out there and hunt all day, now, I haven't even bought my licenses yet this year.

Tell your stakeholders that the hunting industry doesn't just revolve around deer hunting and that hunting overall game species in our state needs fixed. The deer are just the last straw and people are starting to talk a lot louder the longer it goes.

I can't believe I am reading this. Yes there is less interest....especially when landowners tell 10 year olds no.

This type of thing really gets under my skin.

I will also add that leasing has had an effect. Land once hunted by many is now hunted by few. I know of a few guys that quit hunting because the land was leased and didn't want to hunt public.

I also agree with Adam, big picture thinking. Habitat, would be my one word for that.

Pretty hard for kids to find places to hunt these days. Years ago you could knock on damn near any door and get permission.

2x. Very difficult to find property to hunt. I am very fortunate to be allowed on a family friends piece.

Not sure if it's just around my area or not but it's tough to find access.

So what are the solutions? If the top issues are narrowed down to deer population, hunter access, public land management and deer disease the what are solutions and goals to work toward in these four problem areas?

I was referring to the general public not the above average kids associated with the above average TOO forum members.

While it is increasingly difficult today vs yesteryear to get permission where we would like, I still contend that does not mean hunters in general lost access. These properties are still Hunted, if hunter access was truly an issue there would have been no way hunters could have decreased the population as much as it has been. Times are simply different today. For example in the older days let's say we had 20 apples shared by 20 people. In today's times we still have 20 apples however each of the 20 people have their own Apple and they do not have access to the other person's Apple.

This is not a hunter access problem in the traditional sense where large swathes of land have been shut down for hunting.

Admittingly leasing locks up land that was once available to the general Hunter, however that land is still being accessed by hunters.

Or a landowner who would once let anyone hunt now only allows family to hunt, this land is also still accessed by hunters.

And unfortunately from what I have seen land that does not allow any hunting at all is still trespassed and hunted from neighboring properties. While not expressly allowed this land to is also still accessed by hunters.

I would venture to say that if we created a poll and asked, of the locations you have permission how many of the surrounding properties that border you are hunted; we would find that the vast vast majority of them are hunted.

The problem is not "Hunters want access to hunt an unhunted property" the problem is "I want access to hunt too." And those are two totally different problems.
