Disgusting pics of a pig...

Plenty more chances being made...

If anyone was ever interested in buying a hog to slaughter, this would be a great time to try it. They aren't worth much at the market right now. You could get one for a couple dollars over butchering cost. Call your local butcher! Not a bad way to spend some of that tax return...

What's driving down pork prices? I bought a dozen one pound packs of Kroger hickory smoked thick cut bacon for $2.50 each last weekend. Haven't seen one pound packs of bacon that cheap in 4-5 years.

I read somewhere a virus that started sometime back in 2013 that killed millions of pigs is pretty much now under control. Supply is back up so prices are coming back down.

I have no idea Joe? Has to be Bush's fault...

No joke it's in the shitter. From Fridays USDA market news.

"5-Day Rolling Average Market Hog: 206.38 lb carcass, 0.72 inch back-fat,
7.14 square inch loin/2.38 inch loin depth, FFLI: 51.86%

Price Range $54.50 - $60.00"

I should note the price above is per hundredweight.

This was true, but it has fallen well below what it was prior. Two years ago was the biggest hit.

I was just reading that. In feb of 14 they thought this disease called PED was going to kill like 25% of the pork. Drove prices through the roof in late 14 up to $90+ per hundredweight. Turns out it was a bunch of fluff and they managed to get out ahead of it. The kill off never happened. Lots of farmers bought more pigs to capitalize on what they thought would be record profits. Turns out all they did was flood the market and drive prices through the floor.

I think like everything else these markets are cyclical. The PR machine would like to have us believe these price hikes are traceable to a single event, like a virus. If you can believe the attached report, however, this price drop is part of a larger agricultural bubble bursting.

Interestingly enough for the deer hunter, land prices are part of this latest bubble and are expected to fall in unison along with everything else in the ag sector in the coming months.
