Garden progress.

I have two 40x50's to till Sunday. Then I have two 4-4x4 raised beds to throw some top soil and peat in and till with a micro tiller. Not sure if I am even going to do corn this year. It has been so shitty the last two years that it sucks.
 
Dumped four yards of top soil blended with compost on my garden today. I have been meaning to build it up the last couple of years. Tends to get a bit flooded at times despite not being in a horribly low spot. Leveled it out with the bobcat. Going to extend it a bit here soon and probably bring in some more top soil with compost or manure.

This year I am placing straw around all the plants. I am tired of weeds. I am tired of weeding. Hoping the straw eliminates most of this.

The better soil also lets you plant food closer together as they wont have to compete for nutrients and water. right now I have a 4x4 one up that has 12 lettuce starts, 1 dozen shallots and 2 rows of sugar snap peas in it. You do have to water more but that sure as hell beats pulling weeds. the compaction is a non issue...even a rototiller compacts the soil somewhat at the bottom. You will get what is called hard pan and thats when you have to hit it with a plow...I'm going to be building a couple more and will take pictures

For bigger boxes I've heard that soaker hose's work great, I only have 2 4x4 boxes so watering it with the hose every so often doesn't take long...plus the peet moss really helps keep moisture in.

I planted a great garden one summer and then we replaced the line to the septic tank...it wasn't underneath it but the backhoe finished it off.
