Thanks guys. I just sat down. I took notes from the calculated savage (Tyler) last year and got it done in 45 minutes. lol. Actually he was upset with me because I didn’t go sit on the ground where the cell cam is on out the ridge. We have half a dozen public land shooters feeding on acorns at that cam. But I didn’t want to blow them out in the dark and I knew this spot would also be active.
It was the maiden voyage for the new Excalibur crossbow. Crossbows suck to lug through the woods and they are cumbersome in the stand. But they are a killing machine. About half an hour after daylight I saw antlers at 30 yards coming my way on the ridge top walking trail. I had just hung up the X and had to grab it quick. As soon as I got ready he was at 10 yards broad side and I touched off the trigger. He bolted right under me and stopped 30 yards behind me. I could see the exit side and there was no hole. I’m thinking what just happened. He stood there for about 30 seconds and started walking over the hill. Looking perfectly healthy. He walked about 30 yards and then had an unsteady step. Now I’m thinking well I must have hit him. He goes another 10 yards and drops into a bedded position. Five seconds later he flops over dead. Now I’m really confused. lol
I waited a few minutes and climbed down. The bolt was covered in blood. I walked to where he stood and there was blood. Then where he walked was like someone was carrying an overfull bucket of red paint. It was coming out in gushes. I hit him where I wanted and the exit was under the armpit. The X-Act 100 broadhead destroyed him. Their will to live will never cease to amaze me.
For Tyler county public land he’s a good one. 9 points, 110” and 127#. I’ve always said you can add 30” to a buck there to get a comparative to Ohio. It might be closer to 20” now since the bucks are getting better.
