We just got back from bourbon touring and tasting for 3 days. Started in Frankfort Ky, hit distilleries there and in between Bardstown where we had an air BNB house. 4 couples for most of the trip but one left to go watch the Reds opening day game cuz the nephew of the husband was flying the lead KC135 over GABP before the game and they wanted to watch and video it in person! GREAT STUFF!👍🏻 They flew out of C-bus and landed at CVG and was escorted to game then introduced as they stood on top of the Reds dugout to many cheers. 👍🏻👍🏻
We hit Buffalo Trace and did the Taylor Tour and tasted EHT Sm Batch, single barrel and barrel proof and I bought some goodies there as well. 3 EHT sm batches with extra help from group and some deco for barzebo. Then off to Wild Turkey where I bought a bottle of WT Pvt selection single barrel 101. Then we headed to Four Roses in Lawrenceburg and snagged a bottle of 4Roses single barrel barrel strength OBSK then onto Lux Row for a brief stop to look around and sample. Then we headed to Bardstown and hit it Bardstown distillery and Heaven Hill to see if any EC grenade 125’s were still out but it was late in the afternoon and they were gone. We had a HH tour scheduled at 10:30am the next day but my BIL and I planned on being there @6:30 am to possibly get a William HH 19 year but there was a looooong line of all nighters in chairs there which put us at 44 and 45 in line and they only put out 24. CRAZY how the flippers work but oh well, I snagged 2 EC grenade 125’s after the tour before lunch with Tams help. We really enjoyed the tour given to us by Jennifer who did an unbelievable job filling us in on so much info and history of HH’s and the bourbon history in the surrounding area. We tasted 4 bottles there as well. We ran over to Jim Beam where I got my first Little Book Bookers ever and swung by the 4 Roses Cocks Creek location and the Willett distillery to see what they had for quick stop to finish up yesterday’s running. We settled in at Mammys bar for some March madness action and wings and beers at 7 and left at halftime to watch remaiders of first 2 games at air BNB before retiring. We got up early and headed to Louisvilles whiskey row to hit Old Forester, Michters and Evan Williams and ate lunch at Mussels and Burgers before heading home before rush hour in N KY/Cincy got bad later in our trip home. Neither of the 3 on Whiskey Row we visited had any allocated set out nor acted like they were going to later so we bounced.
Another place we ate dinner that I highly recommend on this trip besides Mammy’s in Bardstown was The Talbott House/Tavern which guess is the oldest in the country. Jesse James, Abe Lincoln are amongst several other well known people to have frequented it back in the day. Food was great and the Old Fashioned was great. I also highly recommend checking out Doc Crows on Whiskey Row next to Old Forester as well. It was a great fun trip with family and friends and was much needed for both of us.🤟🏻🥃

Interesting fact, mind blowing actually. Jim Beam has roughly 2.8 million barrels stored in warehouses, HH has roughly 2.2 million barrels and BT has roughly 1.5 million if I remember correctly.😳

Two bottles we cracked on trip to indulge on at the house and between stops a few times were great pours. The 4Roses juice was one my BIL purchased earlier that day and the Good Times was compliments of @Hedgelj. Thanks Doug, we really enjoyed it, solid pour.👍🏻🥃

The Little Book from Jim Beam

New barrels at one of the newer rickhouses at HH. They interior wood beams are pine due to white oak conservation efforts.
IMG_7532.jpeg

Oldest rickhouse with Old Fitzgerald barrel and plumb bob that’s monitored religiously to keep warehouse structures from shifting and compromising 28-58K barrels depending on the size of warehouses. During the big fire they lost 140K barrels in 7 warehouses which was 2% of the worlds bourbon supply at the time and 13% of HH volume at the time. 😳
Also photo of guide with a copper tool used by the bourbon taster called the “thief” to draw from clocked barrels to taste. The photo is of Parker Beam the famed taster/distiller in HH history which also a high end bottle brand is labeled.

If they pull too many barrels from parts of the rickhouse and the plumb bob goes off center they strategically move other barrels around to get back to plumb. This was at HH but I’m sure other distilleries do things similar.
At BT the rickhouses are freestanding not connected or attached to walls of warehouses.

This last pic is of the guide pouring us the last two delicious pours of our tour at Buffalo Trace. The EHT single barrel was first followed up by the EHT barrel proof my favorite brand of all.

The term clocked barrel means the barrel is positioned to where the bung hole is in the 11:00-1:00 position for the thief draw and less loss during leaking at the bung.

Juice hotter than 140 proof is called Hazmat cuz it’s restricted from being flown by airplane.

My BIL got 2-3 bottles of the Coy Hill during a sudden release a week or so ago at local OHLQ locations. I was busy burning brush to see the alert on my phone.🤦🏻‍♂️😂

A cool story told by guide was part of this story.

John Fitzgerald was eventually caught by the Judge stealing jugs of bourbon from barrels he thought tasted great. The Judge tasted the contents of the jugs he got caught with that night and asked him to take him back inside the warehouse and show him which barrels he used the thief on because they were quite delicious. After contemplating whether he was going to lock him up he decided he was worth more to him as a taster than sitting in a jail cell. This is when and how the brand Larceny was born.
