If you're grandpa lived down south and they got aggressive it may have been that their hive was overtaken by Africanized bees.

Also, if anyone ever sees a swarm of bees on a tree limb let me know. I may want to come out and get them.

Nah. This was in Alabama about 20 years ago. Today the AHB hasn't spread there yet. I think he said he thought they were getting ready to swarm or leave for some reason.

They'll swarm if the hive gets to small, ie no one robbed their honey, or if the queen dies before a new one hatches.
