If you like trains ....

Back in the day there were a lot of short line railroads. Conrail consolidated a bunch and then eventually split up between Norfolk Southern and CSX.
Good to see some small lines still working it!

Ohio is full of them .....just think though, back before automobiles, almost every little town had a railroad running thru .....

If your into trains, look up the “Ashtabula train disaster “. 12/29/1876. The cemetery where the victims were mostly buried is one of the most haunted places in the state. The guy that designed the bridge eventually killed himself over guilt for the new support design.
His crypt is a mere stones throw away from the victims marker.

Victims memorial

A friend of mine is an historical authority on the subject and has metal detected the site for years. One of the more haunting finds are little gold balls found in the spring around and down stream. They are the gold teeth and jewelry of the victims melted from the fires that so badly incinerated. At that time, all the cars had wood burning stoves going. When the cars crashed into the valley below, everything burned. Many reported cry’s for help, tangled in the wood, fire and steel wreckage.

PBS did a movie of the event. Worth the watch.

I'd love to hear his stories Jim ..

Went down a rabbit hole, here is what I could find about railroads. The data varies some depending on the year and source.

Class 1 over 504 million in revenue
7 railroads there were 132 in 1990 91,773 statute miles.

Class 2 40-504 million in revenue
21 railroads 10,335 route miles

Class 3 under 40 million in revenue
Over 500 railroads around 33,000 miles

Many of the Class 3 railroads are owned by holding companies.
