If you won the lottery, would you buy one large property or a few smaller properties? I see the drurys have went with more smaller properties over the years. I have always thought a larger contiguous property would do better. I’m sure every state is different.

I'd have a decent sized duck and deer camp property here in Ohio, (that I'd work to establish quail and pheasant on too) but I'd also earmark a good amount of that lotto funding for out of state hunts every year.

I'd buy one big chunk and it would be my oasis. Some quality river bottom ground with a big ridge or two would be awesome.

The problem with owning 1 big property is lack of flexibility, all your eggs are in 1 basket.

That said owning a 500-1000 acre hunting property does sound appealing.

It’s hard to burnout stands and easier to monitor if you live on it and it’s all in one place.

If the goal is to kill a big deer every year, I think you’d be better off buying smaller, key pieces of property. You can’t kill a big deer if he’s not here, and you better buy at least 2,000 acres if you plan to keep him all to yourself. I think smaller properties consisting of prime habitat and food would pull more deer into your wheelhouse if you played your cards right.

That being said, I’d opt for one large property… essentially a homestead. And I would buy brand new equipment and start farming. Every gallon of fuel, every individual seed I planted, and every piece of iron I purchased, would all be tax-deductible under the farm LLC. I’d never work a real job again. I’d farm, both for grain and for wildlife.
