While I was practicing today I noticed this big fuggin' moth on the neck of my deer target. I must have shot a dozen arrows into that target before I noticed it. This thing has about a 6" wingspan. I've never seen one before. They do not feed, so their life span is very, very short, so I feel pretty luck to have seen one with my own eyes. This one is likely a female as the males have quite a lot more brown markings. Was still there when I called it quits. I'm gonna go see if it is still there before it gets dark.

Back when I was a kid in the late 60's or early 70's there was a Luna Moth flying around the street light in front of our house. It was a giant too. The next morning it lay dead in the street and was prettier than any butterfly I'd ever seen! I've never seen another one alive, though there was a giant collection of butterflies and moths at a Museum up in Niagara Falls. It also had the bark from a Redwood tree you could walk inside that was about 16' in diameter and 10' tall. Inside attached to the bark with pins were notes left by visitors from all over the world.

The Luna moth I saw was more a beautiful shade of light blue and the eyeballs on the wings looked much more human like as I remember.

Being a fisherman I've seen the hellgrammite lures, but never a hellgrammite. This is what they turn into! There is a creek down the hill, so thats where it came from. P.S. that is a male and those aren't pinchers. Only the female retains her ability to pinch.
