Classic problem… Good, fishable ice for a few days with ideal weather conditions. Word gets out, then the out of towners show up to fish. I’d be willing to bet most if not all of those folks getting rescued today traveled here from out of town. Open water in the south passage, a crack that was already open, and a stiff SSW wind… the perfect recipe for a moving ice flow, which most locals know to avoid like the plague.

Very similar to what happens and is happening today up on Saginaw Bay too.

Yep, you got that right. I’m sometimes one of those guilty non-locals up at Sag Bay. But I try to be smart about it if I can help it.

I've never tried fishing that up there simply because of that, not knowing where to go and where to stay away from.

Usually the next day all the stuff left behind is gone. Easy to pull a flat bottom boat out to get across the cracks. If your lucky you can pay the salvage fee and get your shit back.

Someone's done it before I see. The biggest issue I can see right off the bat is shove ice.

Pack a chain saw. I've watched them cut a lane to get through the shove and on to better ice.

Did some ice scouting this afternoon myself. Most areas are fishable already but by this weekend they will be prime! Can’t wait to get my son on some panfish through the ice!

Went yesterday…. 2-3” of not so great ice, but had I gone through I could’ve stood up and had my float suit, picks, etc. Picked up a new toy and absolutely had to try it Should be able to get on most of the inland water in the next few days.
