Sounds like you had a workout down south. Glad you had a good day. It's a tough thing to decide when it is time to retire a good old dog. I had a 12 year old male when my current old dog was a pup. He was on the heavy side and moving a little slow when the season opened but it was impossible to sneak out of the house with a shotgun with him around. (He was inconsolable every deer season - wouldn't look me in the eye when I came back at night after leaving him). I thought the better of it but I took him. He got tired after a couple hours and I was taking him back to the truck when he jumped one in the ditch. Watched him run the rabbit through the briars to the top of a steep bank dragging his back legs behind him. I felt terrible. He recovered for the most part though and enjoyed the easy life until age 17.
We hunted in Harrison county on Saturday. Wasn't too good. Rabbits were hard to find. Most of the ones we did jump went straight to a hole. We had two decent chases where the rabbit came back but they were not very long and they were having trouble tracking in places. Not sure what was wrong. We were at the same place a couple weeks ago and they ran all day long. We hadn't shot any there, maybe somebody else has. We did shoot one this time just to remind the dogs what we were out there for.
