While I was in Florida, hunter my youngest boy went fishing catching a shitload of redfish. I had a meeting today at work and he’s gone again. Guess who is cleaning fish!

Damn kids...I’d also have a talk with him about fish coolers...

We’ve had the talk before. I’m cleaning less nowadays. I grew up cleaning fish since 10 yrs old. My dad told me one day “you caught them, you clean them”. He’s never cleaned a fish since.

What’s the knife of choice? You clean a lot of game...I’d like to see what knifes and such that you use to do it in a timely manor. I like the tubs you use, thinking about getting a couple myself to replace the mixing bowels.

Im a simple kind of person. I like the dexter knives. Filet type. The wider the blade the harder it is to turn while cutting. Small fish I prefer a 7” and larger I like the 9”.

You can use an electric knife on small scale fish with light bones. I’ve burned up a few. Now I just do it by hand. It’s what works for me. I clean 98% of my fish w a knife. The more you do it the easier it is.

Also helps that I used to run a commercial fishing dock, so let’s say I have some experience besides all the fish I’ve caught on a line and in crab traps that would get cleaned. Funny thing is I use the same set up for skinning, caping and cutting up deer and game. KISS is the best way.

The tubs are great and multi purpose. From putting boiled seafood in, filets and cuts of meat, and processing deer meat. The options are unlimited. Tubs are cheap from bass pro or cabelas, ranging in the 7$. Mine are not the deep ones cause it’s had to put in the fridge and get very heavy when loaded.

I think Dave is referring to the cost of that cooler vs an igloo ruined by fish

All my coolers are fish and game coolers. Then there are used for everything else such as beer and such. A little bleach and dawn will have it smelling new again.

Sometimes there is fish and drinks in it on the boat. Just rinse the drink off and enjoy.

Outstanding. I’ve used dexter before. Thanks for sharing. You made quick work out of it and always seem to, do it raised the question. Thanks for answering it!

Man u don't have the typical American diet. Lucky shit! Surf and turf non stop.....im jealous

Well in some aspects I am lucky. Seafood is very expensive. To a commercial fisherman it’s cheap. You can barter w other fishermen also. This for that kind of thing. Most of our meat is game that we kill. Chicken, pork and steaks we have to buy but deer supplement a good portion of red meat. We can kill six deer a year here, both boys hunt so we never run out of deer meat. We catch all kind of fish, frog legs, I will buy fresh shrimp at dock cost and usually catch my own crawfish. Crabs are free along with soft shell crabs. My buddy grows a giant garden so vegetables come easy also.

A friend that started deer hunting w me last year killed a deer and I brought him 3 more quarter up. He called me on my way to Florida and said he will be bringing me red snapper vacuum packed from a trip he just went on with a friend. So we are lucky, not trying to brag, it is what it is.

Y’all get to hunt giant deer in the rut w a bow. I’m jealous, I’ve never killed a real good buck w my bow. Some of y’all have farms and places to duck and goose hunt. We have to do it the hard way.

Id give up a chance of shooting a big buck to shoot six freezer fillers and have access to seafood and a endless growing season. Erie plus lake and pond panfish fill a void here somewhat. Other than shit that can eat or kill you and intense heat for a few months southern life seems downright amazing to me.

It’s all I know, been here all my life. It’s not as hot when you don’t live in the concrete jungle.
