Season here is over February 1st. Some areas go into February. I’m don’t w the deer this year. At the camp Sunday is last day for duck season, down here the season is open till February 1st. Really would like to make a trip to Venice for a few days duck hunting. Waiting for it to warm up some. It was 11 degrees this morning

We made it back. Tried to post out there but barely had service. 8 of us hunted out of 4 boats way down in the “Gulf of America”!

We arrived at the launch with good weather and calm water to take the 40 minute ride down the Mississippi River. Unloaded the boats and set up camp, then we got a game plan to go scout some areas. We returned with the same results, just a few ducks here and there. Started a fire at dark and cooked a pot of tators w sausage. Shit I think I was the first one in bed at 8 o’clock. Woke up to have the tide out but would rise all day. Most places were high and dry so we ended up at the gulfs edge with just a canvasback killed. At noon we ate a sammich and changed up hunting partners and dug out for a new area now that we had water. I was getting agitated because we weren’t seeing any ducks at all. Almost 5 hours baking in the sun and waiting then some ducks began to fly. We had a group of canvasbacks come in and we dropped 3. Some more came in and at the end of shooting time we had our limit for 3 hunters, 6 canvasbacks.

I went to bed early, was tired as Pearl was ready also. It was a long day. Laid down and search on ONX to find a way to get into a location with no water. This morning worked out great from my homework. Set up before shooting time and the canvasback flocks didn’t disappoint. Had them coming is in groups of 10-30 at a time. We quickly killed our 6 and killed 2 redheads. Next was a teal and then we shot 4 scuap “dos gris”. Passed on some pintails that were hens and drakes w no sprig. We shot a ruddy duck and a gadwall. We waited to shoot out pintails but it didn’t work out so we ended w 15 ducks. Had a great hunt.

Sitting inside the wife says there is a turkey in the yard. It’s a wild hen. She says someone’s pet turkey got out. I told her it’s wild. If only the Tom was in tow, could’ve gotten western around here. Hopefully she’s looking for a nesting spot. Would be cool to follow along.

Back at the camp. Drove in last night to find busted pipes. Par for the course I guess.

Got up this morning to go listen.
IMG_7299.jpeg
At the first spot nothing was heard. Pulled up a half mile and got out the truck and I could hear hens tree yelping. Sat there for a bit and heard the gobble. Mark the spot and drove to the spot where I heard one last year. Yup he’s still there. Walked the other way about 400 yards and had another gobble. Not sure if same Tom but I will take it. Drove to an atv trail and launched my e-bike. Went 3 miles to a lake not seeing or hearing anything. Did come up on a set of Tom tracks in the mud. Got back to truck and driving out the road I stopped at some pipeline in the woods. Thought I seen something so I stopped and got out to put binos on it. Sure as shit 2 Tom’s and 3 hens. Snapped a pic.
IMG_7296.jpeg

Pic was around 4-500 yards away. Snuck out and crossed the road to see if anything was across on the other pipeline. Nothing was seen but as I walked back towards the truck a Tom gobbled. One on one side and two on the other, looking promising. Drove down the road to hit another area. Took the bike a mile or so and didn’t hear anything. Came back to the truck and went down the other way about a quarter or so. Sat there for a second and boom, one sounded off right there. Left there and went down a good ways to another atv trail. They are closed to atv but can take a bike. Drove in about 3/4’s and there was a Tom in the road around the corner. He busted and ran into the woods. Drove another mile w nothing else.

I had one more spot to check out and it’s way back. Long bike ride and nothing was seen until I got to the end. A turkey ran into the woods, not sure if Tom or not but looked like it as it was 500 yards down from the T in trail.

Came back to town to get pipe and fittings. Stopped at the gas station for something to eat but was sold out at 12:30.

Might go fishing on a lake for crappie and listen for a bird or maybe hear one fly up. Waiting on a buddy to see if he’s getting off work early enough.

Tomorrow I will check out another area.

Scouted a different area hearing one and went to another spot and heard one by the truck. Rode 20 miles on back seeing 6 hogs and everything else but turkeys and deer.

Left there and took the long way to the camp. Passed an atv trail and thought I caught something on it. Backed up in the parking lot, shonouff…..butterball w 2 hens. Watched them for almost 20-30 minutes as they slowly came my way.

he strutted to the truck up to 15 steps.

Left there and headed to where I found birds yesterday. Getting close to the pipeline that had 2 Toms and I see them strutting on a grassy path before it. Went to the end to come back and take a pic but they were MIA. Got out of there and made the turn in the direction where I roosted the first bird and he standing in the gravel road all bowed up w 2 hens.
