Live from Mississippi.

We ran out to Horn island today. Horn is a 15 mile long uninhabited Island that's part of the national seashore. Think Perdido key but too far to build a bridge to at 8 miles offshore. We ran a total of 35 miles cruising around. Stopped a few times and fished but the sound was packed with pogies (menhaden). Caught the always there hard-head catfish, and a couple mullet in a cast net. Saw dolphins, sharks and rays. I barely missed two sea turtles screwing on the surface but managed to dodge them. The winds were out of the east today so the jellyfish were stacked up on the north shore of the island. The boys had a blast scooping dinner plate sized jellys with a net. By the time thy had enough they had a pile in the sand that looked like someone dumped a 55 gallon drum of jellyfish. 🤣 Unfortunatly I didn't get a picture of the pile because my phone was on the boat.

I got a ticket for not having a life jacket a few weeks ago. Just busy at the ramp loading everything for alligator hunting and left it in the truck. Went to court today for the date on the ticket to try and get it reduced some. Court starts at 9 and they say you have to be checked in before 9 or they won't let you in the courtroom. At 9:30 the judge comes out in the hall and apologized to everyone. He said "We're having trouble getting a bailiff this morning from the Sheriffs department. If you showed up here at 9:01 we wouldn't let you in the courtroom; when I called your name you would be marked as missing your court date and I would sign a bench warrant for your arrest. As it stands now the County has missed it's court date this morning. As such, all misdemeanor cases before me today are dismissed."

I guess they're called honorable for a reason.

On another note. Mississippi Game Wardens / Marine Patrol etc don't play. You will get ZERO slack for infractions. I don't think they've written a warning in their life. Unlike Ohio where they're generally go with the flow guys who most times are generally nice people. Ours are "nice" but it's the fake nice, they're just trying to engage in conversation to see if they can nail you with something. I was talking to a retired warden here recently on why they're such buttholes. He said it's because a lot of people in Ms have an "outlaw" mentality. They think it's cool to break game laws like baiting duck holes, putting glitter in dove fields, etc. They brag about it on social media and getting a ticket is kind of a "cool" thing. It's created a us vs them scenario where people hate wardens and have a "F them, catch me if you can, mentality". He then admitted that many people are probably like that because the wardens are assholes too. It's a circle built from a natural distrust of government, a people who grew up very rural in the deep south where being an outlaw is who they are, it's a culture that dates all the way back to the civil war. It's no different than cops in black neighborhoods, they don't like cops, and cops don't like them. It's a circle.

Please excuse a dumb question from a yankee…..I’ve never heard of glitter in a field for dove hunting. Why?

Doves have a crackhead brain for seeds, small rocks, etc. They can see glitter sparkles from the air and attracts them. It's considered baiting just like salt. People throw out birdseed, the glitter makes them find the seeds quicker or makes them fly down to check out the field instead of flying over or by it.
