The story lives on.
We did see him tonight, but he was trailing a buck that was being super cautious. The switch in wind direction changed where they tend to bed on the W winds we've had for several days now. When they came from where they did tonight, they had a great view of the whole holler and they took advantage of that. They milled around eating red oak acorns and watching our side of the holler for 20 minutes. We finally lost viable shooting light, so we called it a season.
The good news is that my middle daughter is a bit moody and she tends to take things hard, but she left with a positive outlook. She said she had fun this year and that she wants to hunt harder next year. I promised her that next year would be her year, so the pressure is on!
