I'd say he was a 130's 8 point. Out past his ears and straight up. All kinds of length and mass. He had it all except for brow tines.
Long story short:
I'm blowing around like crazy in the stand I just hung a couple days ago. Bow was swing in the wind on its holder. Sleeting off and on. Saw 3 does moving in a hurry. About 20 minutes after that I pick up movement and here he comes walking straight towards me. I grabbed my bow and positioned myself on the other side of the tree as to have a perfect <15 yard shot.
He gets to about 20 yards still walking straight towards me and stops. The wind was blowing so hard in my face I could hardly keep my eyes open, and the wind was f'n perfect. He checks up and is stairing at the bottom of my stand for at least a minute.
He finally puts her in reverse and turns and starts to walk away. He was quartering away pretty hard when he hit a shooting lane I was eyeing. I bring my bow to the other side of the tree, pick my spot, and let one fly at around 23 yards.
Shot felt good. I'm really not sure wtf happened. Wish I had it on video. Did I straight up just tank the shot? Did he jump the string? Seems like he moved before the arrow sailed over him. Arrow was sticking in the ground where I thought it should of been after finding it with my binocs.
20+ is the high end of my range. I went for it and failed. Argh.
Hell of a hunt for late January. Things went awry when he checked up and didn't keep comeing. I have no f'n clue how he knew something wasn't right. Either way, I was due to catch a break and I did by haveing him that close, just couldn't close the deal.
Saw a dink buck after that.
Going to stay after it.
