Well here’s the update. We got up early and set out for the NWR. Got the spot where I park the Atv. Ditch was full of water and so was the woods. We took out time heading to the marked trees from last year. Dropped my boy off at the first tree and headed towards the next mark.
It was starting to break daylight so I found a good nutall tree and put my stand on the tree. Shit strap between the stands was broke... fuck it got in stand. Bent down to put my feet in the straps and they broke...mfer! I just used the stand oct 20 and stand stays inside.
Managed to get 10’ and we hunted till 10. Did see a deer but after it took off, I guess it seen me... no shot.

So yesterday instead of scouting, I went to my property (179) acres to see what was up. Found a shit ton of tracks and a bunch of scrapes. Also the ag field bordering me still has beans up in it. Gonna be a good year.

Ok I’m in the stand. Had a few wasp I had to dispatch w my had. Red and ginnie wasp. Figured I’d sit the soybeans while there are here. Don’t expect to see and deer till 5 or so.

Ok, I’m trying to keep this interesting so here goes. Me and DJ my son are back in the stands. He’s hunting a 15 acre bean field on the edge of the crp. I went to the stand he was in yesterday evening and only seen the bear.
We not expecting much but anything can happen. This is a journey and not a race as our rut isn’t till Christmas and slowing up till January 10th.
So I’m hoping a coyote shows up going back to bed. Usually if we see one, it’s in the morning. It’s 40 degrees w a 2mph south wind. Will send pics of setup and of anything worthy of posting.

The wma had a special rifle day yesterday. My numbers are low at my property due to high population of bears.... they love newborns. So we take advantage of meat hunts and trophy hunt on property. There is two wma that will have a rifle hunt after thanksgiving... we will hunt it.
Our tag limit here is 3 does, one either and two buck tags. We eat a lot of tags usually. Six deer a year will get us through the season. We have a few friends that used to hunt a lot but don’t or someone that hunts a lot that can’t, we will donate meat to them.
Yeah, we eat less deer now at my house. Used to do the same thing.

For the record, hunting public land and putting the hunt all together (scouting, and hunting new spots) is my thing. As I get older I appreciate having my little slice of heaven to call my own. Get tired of doing it the hard way and usually was burnt out before the rut. Last year I slowed the fuck down and tagged out on bucks as I hunted the whole rut. Hoping for a repeat.
