After waiting out a storm before daylight I eventually worked my way back to the big field where we started last weeks hunt. It was about 7:20 as I eased down the road that leads to the back field when I stopped to look over the field before entering. There he was, strutting back and forth, not 10 yards from the corner by the gate where we sat last week! There was another bird with him feeding along the edge of the woods. The Tom never made a peep.
When he looked like he was headed towards the woods where we encountered him before I did a U-turn and booked it down into the woods by the same trees that we sat by last week. I waited a few minutes and called out with some soft purrs and cuts and he hammered! Not a minute later he was gobbling straight across from me just inside the edge of the woods. I couldn’t see him but he was gobbling every time I made a sound. This went on for a half hour or so when he finally went back up into the field and it sounded like he was heading back to the gate area. Turkey 1, Hunter 0…
I then went back to the big field and slipped along the north edge to the northeast corner. I sat there a while waiting out a shower when I heard him gobble in the field behind the gate on private property. After hearing him gobble a few times I eased up to the gate and looked out into the field. After a minute or so I heard him gobble again. It sounded like he was on the south end of the field. I then set up a Hen and a Jake decoy about the same place that you put yours the other day. I then crawled in the same corner where we spent all morning on our hunt last week, waited a few minutes and made a soft purr. Gobble Gobble! Purr,Cluck, Cluck…Gobble Gobble! He was coming fast!!!
Gun up; pointed at the gate, I was ready to blow his head off! Gobble Gobble; he stopped by the trees in the private field where you said that you had one hang up on you before. I then played the silent game, waiting for him to come to the gate and check out the Hen on the other side (me). Another Gobble, he was getting closer! Minutes go by and nothing. Where did he go? Purr/Gobble! He was now behind me in the grass field. I didn’t want to turn my head but I knew he was there.
Minutes later, Gobble! He was working his way down the fence to my right. I knew that there was a section along the fence that was clear of vegetation and that he would have an unobstructed view of my decoys. I again played the silent game. Gobble…come on, come on! Gobble…dang he is going away, towards the strip of woods where he hangs out. Cluck, Cluck…Purr….Gobble! He still is going away! Yelp…Yelp…Gobble! I go silent again for awhile. Gobble…he’s in the woods! Crap! I gather up everything and make the loop around and set up again in the strip of woods that has become all too familiar. Turkey 2, Hunter 0.
Gobble! He’s up at the head of the woods, same spot that he was in last week, on private land. Purr/Gobble; He cut me off. I gave him the silent treatment again. Minutes later, Gobble, he’s at the same place. I still am quiet. Gobble, he’s still in the same place. This went on for 45 minutes. What does it take to get this S.O.B. to commit? He is really pissing me off! Gobble…it sounds like he is going away. I then let him have it with everything in the bag. Purrs, Yelps, Cuts, I had a couple of calls going at once; I even used my Gobble tube on him. He then really got fired up! Double and Triple Gobbles!!! Alright that should do it, he’ll come now!
I waited, and waited, and waited. Nothing…I purred and clucked and he Gobbled again...He was headed back towards the gate!!! I grabbed all my gear and got the hell out of there. He kicked my butt again.
