Honestly sometimes they look bad but come out fairly easy....
Used one of those for years. Had my fair share of backlashes and like you said, most look way worse then it actually is and come out fairly easy.
Tighten down the tension knob or keep the thumb on the spool a little heavier. Whatever you do, don't cast light luses into a good wind lol.
Very first thing mentioned in your introduction is Bigslam .... just great. Lol, welcome ! You're gonna have to take some shit before killing any.
A remedy that works well for me when you get those back lashes, put firm thumb pressure on the spool and reel it in about a half dozen cranks.... You'd be amazed at how easy it'll come out....
