I agree with others that said covert night time operations is the way to go....Deer hunting in general, and not just in Ohio doesn't need any more publicity than news stations and media outlets letting the general public know that there will be a culling operation happening in the park...most people forget about it anyways as they are busy and most sleep at night....The only problem I have with it IS.....How do they know they need to kill 200 deer? Even though Lucas county was an urban hunting area (in years past) with 6 additional tags being offered on top of the 4 deer bag limit, and is currently a 4 deer county I just wonder if 200 deer is too much? And it says they will cull for 3 months...but are they going to stop at 200 deer or keep going for the entire 3 months?

Does anyone know which areas they are culling from?...I know swan creek is very well populated with deer and side cut too.

Mill Creek park up here in Youngstown borders Youngstown and Boardman and they had a deer population issue years ago and they kicked around the sharp shooter vs the bow hunting methods. Decided the bow hunting method was the cheapest and regretted it as people freaked out seeing dead deer being dragged thru their back yards.... Didn't last long.... Don't know what those city folks expected to happen, they bitched about thousands of dollars of landscaping being destroyed on their properties and then turned around and bitched about dead deer being dragged around the bordering properties.....

In Stow Ohio I once killed a deer that died next to a land owner big bay window in their dining room.lol.... To me people just want to bitch, especially in the burbs and city.

Interesting point. With the deer numbers on public land slashed, Joe the Plumber has lost interest. So, he won't be taking his son or daughter as he sees no point when there are no deer.

Over time, hunter numbers dwindle. Thus, the voice of the non-hunter group grows louder and more influential.

It's becoming a rich man's sport and will one day likely be a past time of the elite.

It is a rich man sports, we are basically now Europe before the discovery of the Americas. Each of us on here have our rants or hot button issues, opportunity and cost is my biggest complaint. I don't want to Hijack this thread, but in same light if I were a resident of Toledo or Cleveland I would have started a grassroots movement to hunt these metro parks, I would be pissed.

Toledo Metroparks has held a lottery archery hunt for 3 years in a row now I believe.

The properties being used for the hunts are properties that the metropark has purchased over the years ( here and there in the western Lucas County area)and have never been open to the public.

The culling will take place at public use parks...they will NOT close those down for hunting and I don't think they should either (for the reasons mentioned above dragging deer out and etc.)

I just want to know how they came up with needing to kill 200 deer....are they going to stop at 200 or keep shooting for the whole 3 months.

The whole bow hunting lotto in oak openings was a total front. I participated in it three years ago. The properties that they put the hunters were pretty bunk as far as deer numbers. They knew damn well that the hunters would struggle to kill deer in those areas. Out of around 20 sections the first year they killed around 23 deer. If you were drawn you got a three week season that you could bring a guest. It was just a tool to say that hunters could not kill the amount of deer desired so we decided to hire professional sharp shooters.

If you saw some of the "Billy Bobs" that called themselves "bow hunters" you would seriously feel bad for deer. They let these jack wads practice and practice and practice on the range until they felt comfortable enough to take the test. The test consisted of putting four consecutive arrows into a 12" target at 20 yards. I finally lost my cool after waiting in line for over two hours just so I could shoot four arrows so I could get my sheet stamped to be able to apply for the hunt. Then one of the hacks mouths off about how I need to wait my turn. I replied back that I never have seen a deer that would stand around for 50 shots until the "hunter" hits them in the ass. Then he fired back if your so good why don't you get your bow out and shoot your four arrows and then get off my nuts. I said no problem.

The best part of this story was that my hunting bow was getting strings and cables made. So l walk up to the line with my case. Set the case on the floor and proceed to pull my bow out. The looks were priceless when I pulled out my Oneida with the muzzy spin cast sticking out the front. I proceed to shoot my four arrows, pull them out of the target, and get my proficiency test stamped in under a minute. Told the guy thanks for letting me jump in and bounced. Lol!
I think another aspect people overlook is the secrecy. Using contracted marksman allows the Metroparks to conduct the kill very covertly. They can drive around in unmarked vehicles with silenced rifles at night after the park closes. This allows the deer to simply vanished without a trace or public interference. If they were to open it up to hunters they would have to deal with state regulations and individuals. The bleeding heart animal lovers could show up and undermine everything. Then they would have to deal with Hunter harassment complaints by hunters, slashed tires on vehicles, and a whole host of other issues. And the last thing they need is channel 7 sticking a microphone and Billy Bob's face and him saying some dumb shit. It's all about convenience and efficiency.

I agree with Flathead, the bowhunt was a joke! My buddy was drawn twice and did not even hunt the second year.

Which brings me to another thought......I think the horse is out of the barn as far as doing anything to change the metropark "hunt". The "hunt" will go on with the sharpshooters no matter how loud we scream. The Ottawa Hills hunt is still in the works and maybe we can make this one successful???

A few have mentioned a screening process to weed out yahoos. When I hunted a controlled hunt in Perrysburg some years back some real morons were drawn...so if you were in charge how would you screen out idiots??

A few questions I would have on the application:
How many years have you hunted?
How many deer have you killed?
How many days a year do you spend hunting or scouting?
Have you hunted in urban areas before??
References??

What about:
Requiring all tracking/dragging out to be done after dark?
No gutting on any of the properties?
All carcasses need to be covered?

I am going to be contacting the mayor and would like to get some ideas on how to make this a success and maybe a model for other communities. Any input from you guys would be appreciated.

so for years NW ohio deer "hunters" have been wanting the metroparks to allow bowhunting...for years we have talked about municipalities opening up areas to bowhunting via lottery or whatever...They finally do it, and people still aren't happy about it???

I agree the properties weren't overwhelmed with deer, but the one I hunted still had plenty of rubs and scrapes and trails...I only saw one deer in the 3 weeks I hunted but I only had 2 sits at that property...so to me that is pretty good...I never once expected to go out and have a ranger hand me a deer. I just wish I had more time to hunt it.

I would love for the parks to open areas like sidecut or swan creek to hunting but, again, for the reasons mentioned above by others, that is not likely going to happen any time soon....

Again, I still think that 200 deer is a lot and would like to know who and how they came up with that estimated number and length of time.

I don't think anyone is "complaining", just stating the facts. Seeing one deer in 3 weeks is not what I would call a productive hunt. I truly believe that these hunts were a set-up for the sharpshooter program. "Bowhunters could not get it done so we had to hire sharpshooters to manage the herd that we have mismanaged for decades"

Off the subject of the metropark hunts but park related.....they are buying up land like crazy, much of the land they are buying was land previously open to hunting. More importantly do people realize the metropark system is the largest landowner in Lucas county? Do people also realize that once the park buys it, it comes off of the tax rolls?? Where is that lost tax revenue going to come from??

I like a lot of what you said above I would add. Move the qualifying distance to 40 yards, do not allow the use of a rest, no practice shots prior to qualifying, make it a 6 inch circle.

Have a written examination that includes deer at various shot angles for shoot do not shoot. On the ones where they say shoot have them mark shot placement and draw to the best of their ability the deers vital organs.

Disallow the wearing of camo for hunters. This way they blend more naturally with park visitors. And like it or not to the nonhunting public camo screams uneducated dumb redneck. Don't believe me walk in to a jewelry store wearing a camo hat versus not wearing a hat and see the level of service.

I sort of like it when people underestimate me because I am big, talk slow and wear a camo hat, I try to incorporate camo into my business casual dress code at work on a weekly basis.

Saw the same thing...apparently someone is saying there is going to be another cull of 100 more deer...if that true and its at the same park, there will be about 40 deer left....this shit is out of Control!!

Going back to the good ole days if you see a deer consider yourself lucky

All I can say is wow. To me that is almost disgusting. Talk about not respecting an animal after I shoot one I couldn't tell you how many times I visit that animal to reflect on the experience and thank the big man and the deer for the goodness I feel. Definitely none of that here
