The Ohio Wildlife Council approved reducing the 2022 spring wild turkey season limit to one bird.
All hunters may harvest one bearded (male) wild turkey during the spring 2022 hunting season. In previous years, the season limit was two birds.

This regulation change includes the 2022 statewide spring wild turkey hunting season and the youth spring hunting season.

I'm OK with this. After hunting turkeys in Tennessee and Kentucky. It's hard to get motivated to hunt here. I went out and didn't hear a bird last year in 4 sits so I gave up. Seems to be small groups around here and your either on them or aren't even close.

I am also okay with this. I hunt a handful of properties as well as some public in the NW part of the state. One property had a few longbeards, handful of jakes and plenty of hens, next couple properties a mile or two down the road with very very similar layouts (ag fields, mature timber, etc) that either have twice as many birds (if not more) or no birds whatsoever. I think the limit to one bird in the spring season will definitely help increase the overall statewide population, and although I partake in it, I don’t think it would be a terrible idea to limit the fall season to bearded birds only as well. Just my thoughts.

I’m in favor. With that said, anyone know the percentage of folks that harvest two? I’ll say I’ve never really had a hard time filling two tags the years I wanted to and most of the guys I know locally that take turkey hunting seriously don’t seem to have much difficulty getting the second bird if they want to. With that said, if I were only able to hunt Saturday mornings, it would be very difficult some years to kill one bird.

I would be interested to know the number of hunters who checked two birds in the same county. I bet it's a relatively small number. Not sure what this will prevent though, odds are if a guy tags out he's just going to guide for his buddy to shoot one or 20+ more. 🤣

I’m not in favor of it.

I could see for public.I don’t hunt public because I have my own land. It’s not much but I feel like I would be cheating someone who does have private land out of opportunities of a chance to pursue animals if i was there killing them.

Just me don’t hold anything against anyone who does.👍

Where I’m at we need a hen reduction not a gobbler reduction.

Now the biggie. When the deer population went down here They reduced the number to two deer which was great . Yet the year they did it we still had less deer killed than year before.

What happens they upped the number agin. SMH…

Plus when I see pictures of a guy and his 26 Friends taking 2 birds a piece.. Constantly. that’s on them. When they don’t see as many birds.🤷🏼‍♂️

This system has been in place for many years I feel it works quite well IMHO.

Remember the DOW when they had a 6 deer limit saying well majority of people only kill one deer.

Well I’d say majority don’t kill one bird the numbers are a lot smaller

I guess what I should say is ya can’t judge one area and make it for the whole state. I honestly feel that’s what happened here.

Be nice to see some statistics… 🤷🏼‍♂️ Where I’m at tho everything is A okay… Either way it doesn’t hurt my feelings. (actually to many hens birds don’t gobble as much)

I just saw how this came to law and was started somewhere else and feel it’s sorta funny.
🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️

It sure didn’t work that way for deer.😂😂

Disclaimer opinions are like assholes everyone has one including me.😝😝😝

I think successful nesting is the only thing that’s going to improve the turkey population. Predator control is the big thing with nesting. Raccoons and possums run rampant in this part of the state. The DOW needs to promote predator control. Limiting the number of Toms to one is not really going to boost the population that much.

Not me per se. I wipe out my share but it’s not enough.
I didn't quote you because I wasn't directing it to you. I know you control what happens in your peace of the pie. And I do agree that it needs handled, I just don't believe they have to be the platform to do so. We (theohiooutdoors.com) IS the biggest platform ohio has to offer. Let's run with it. Maybe a coon contest and other thing to spice up life a little. Anything, anything at all helps these days. Everything is about marketing and I honestly believe we have to power to make a difference. I'm done waiting for other people to do things. I'm motivated to make a change and help to protect this for future generations.

The state is never going to put a bounty on them because they are only interested in generating money so that idea is out. I’m not sure what will get people into killing predators unless they can do it from their cell phones.

I think Jamie has single handedly got more people hunting squirrels the last couple of years with his thread. He simply just shared what he was doing already. It grew to hunting with other members and the pure joy makes everyone want to do it. Same idea would work with coon dogs, IMO. And this joy I speak of us contagious!
