Mason and I met up with my buddies, John and Steve today. OSTA held a shoot at Apache. John and Steve were the only guys I knew as a kid that still shot recurves. In the 80s almost everyone had gone to shooting compound bows. Finding a mentor wasn’t easy but I was fortunate to get to know these two. Somewhere in the late 80s John told me he had killed a deer each season for 22 straight years with one of his trusty recurves. That was no small accomplishment in those days. We only had one tag per season back then.
We all shot ok today. Mason, Steve, and I all shot the same score. There was a fourth man that also shot the same score. Steve had left to get to a grandkids baseball game while Mason, John and I loafed around a few minutes. Then someone announce there was a four-way tie for first place (I didn’t even know OSTA kept track). With Steve already gone, mason and I had to have a shoot off with the other fella. He shot first and made a great shot, just low of center. I shot second, just left, but farther out than the first shooter. Then Mason center punched the bullseye to claim 1st place. lol. Dang kid. He’s got bragging rights for now… it was a good time.
Here is a pic of Mason along with Steve and John. If you’d have told me in 1985 that one day I’d have a pic with these three together shooting bows, I just don’t think I’d have been able to imagine it.
