Hi all. My son and I have hunted CA for some time. He's AF and moving to WPAFB near Dayton. He'll be there this fall and I'll be looking to plan a hunting trip in the near future. Here in CA we often hunt BLM and NF. What, where, with who? do you suggest near Dayton that we can have a good bird hunt with? Can be anything from dove to turkey, don't care. Just want a good field, good birds and some advice on how and where to get that? Thanks all! Much appreciate the advice.

P.S. I'm a Cleveland native, born and raised. Been in CA for 30 yrs. Looking forward to coming back, even if for just a single hunt.

No recommendations? Don't know the area or the forests at all. Should I go with a guide or are the public areas a solid option? Heeeeelllppp!

I'm from NE Ohio and can't speak for the area you're looking at hunting... But other than ducks the states bird population is pretty dismal from my experience... With that being said a guide or pheasant farm would be the way too go....

Good luck as J said there isn't much around. Pheasants it would be a hunting lodge only. There are turkey and doves for the most part are everywhere just need permission on private land.

Thanks all. Looks like a guide is going to be the deal, especially since i may not have the time to scout the forest. Any guide recommendations? I'm not into the $1800 turkey, or anything ridiculous like that. Something fair and reasonable with a good reputation. Thanks again for the help!

It's about 45 minutes from base.

Thank you. Something to go on.

I've been reading through the forum that populations are way down. What's the reason? Here in CA, you may have heard of the multi-year drought. That has really hit populations of all game really hard. But in OH, heck, it rains like Noah's building a boat. Why the low bird populations?

No problem, I don't bird hunt here in Ohio. I got ruined when I was stationed at Mt. Home AFB. And I can't hunt for released birds, that just not my style.

I live in Dayton, very difficult to get permission on private ground. There are a few Phez around, but they are hard to come by. Check out Shawnee State Forrest for Turkey, its about 2 hours South in Adams/Scioto Counties. It is steep and rough country, very low hunting pressure and lots of birds. You can get maps from the ODNR. PM me if you want more info. If you opt to Hunt Cherrybend, let me know I am a member and would take you guys to hunt over my setters if you like.
