Petition to increase non-resident costs

Little early for this. Usually it is after gun season when the "I didn't get a deer, so let's blame the NR hunters for killing my deer, so let's raise our licenses to hopefully eliminate NR hunters from coming to this state" crowd gets going.
Haha! Far from that in my mind. Sorry if that’s how you are reading this.

My desire to see increased fees is so we can start valuing the state's resources at fair market value, then using the increased revenue to add/expand/improve habitat and hunting opportunities in the state.

I've said this for a decade now: We're leaving money on the table that could be used to increase access and opportunity. That's a fair cry from jealousy over leasing or simply disliking NR hunters...

I have no issue with raising fees for what you mention above. However things like this petition has nothing to do with that and simply are people blaming NR for the lower deer population or them not getting a deer. The truth of the matter is the ODNR intentionally lowered the deer population and it doesn't have anything to do with the number of NR hunters.

NRs helped lower the population. We all did as we were used as tools to do that very job. I agree, the petition doesn't address the real issues, but that doesn't preclude an honest conversation the matter.

What are most of your arguments for raising the NR fees though?? Because you would like the ODNR to have all kinds of excess funds for super fun DNR things to do?? Because of leased up property or state land you used to hunt on? Or is it because you want to stick it to the NR as much as possible because you hate them? Those are legitimate questions that show the basis of why people want it to go through the roof. I would guess a good majority of people really aren't truly impacted in any way by the numbers of NR hunters, they just don't like 'em or the outfitters they use.

Because everything has a value, the natural resources of a state are owned by the people of that state and it's potential value should not only be recognized but also maximised. Hopefully to the benefit of the resource and it's collective owners.

The reason that Arizona can allocate a mere 10% of the tags to nonresidents and charge us 20x the cost is because despite the hunting taking place on federal lands, it is the people of Arizona who own the Animals.

You see this on other hunting boards usually right after gun seasons and they blame NR, archery hunters whatever. Been going on for a long time.

The funny thing is NR aren't all guys that have leases. A fairly large portion of these hunters are former Ohio residents that have moved out of state for work or school and come back home to enjoy the hunt. Raise NR fees up really high and you will still have the NR that have leases or pay an outfitter. You are more likely lose the former residents that maybe come back to hunt for a day or two.

Let's not confuse the petition and the purpose behind it with the general consensus around here, which is favorable to NRs, despite our different views on this topic.

Oh yes I understand. If you guys were a bunch of jackwagons, I would have quit posting here a long time ago. Actually that isn't right. You guys are a bunch of jackwagons, but a likeable group of jackwagons. :ROFLMAO:

I disagree. Wildlife agencies are not a for profit company. They simply need to collect enough revenue in order to properly manage the resources.

Kinda funny coming from you who complains about every tax increase that comes around. A license increase is simply a tax increase.

Oh come on bud, it's doubtful you've seen such a stance here with the exception of the occasional individual who was undoubtedly corrected by the masses. We're very NR friendly and welcoming here. There's a big difference between wanting to realize value and blaming someone.

I own 29 acres (cost me $40,000) plus paid a local guy to bulldoze a trail system for me. Also pay him every few years to put stone and culverts in to help curb the erosion. Paid a local to build a dock at my pond, stocked it from a semi local business (Jones fish hatchery) and have them restock with baitfish every few years. I buy my corn in Ohio and split the costs of food plots with my neighbor. I pay my neighbor to keep my trails brushhogged and let him cut what fields I have for hay to feed his cows. I spend money at local restaurants in Logan and McArthur, always stop by Hocking hills moonshine every trip, get my snacks/drinks for my all day sits at Walmart in Logan. Shop at sporting goods stores/bait shops when I go fishing/turkey hunting in the spring. Occasionally buy from local hardware stores and automotive stores. Plus fuel and motel for a week in the spring and two weeks in the fall. In all I spend around $3-4,000 every year in Ohio. A license increase isn’t going to stop me from coming, but they just raised the prices for non resident licenses...why would they raise them again so soon? One thing Ohio does have going for it is that once you buy a license, you’re done. Here in NJ you need a firearms license, archery, fishing, plus a permit for extended bow, muzzleloader, a rifle permit and doe days plus a buck tag for each season. At $28 a pop for each permit plus another $28 for each buck tag...it all adds up. Not to mention turkey permits that are for one week....want to hunt the entire turkey season?...you’ll need five permits. You even need a permit to go clamming. If using a crab pot, you’ll need another permit for that. Granted, hunters aren’t knocking down doors to hunt big deer here like in Ohio, but in the summer there are more out of state license plates than resident tags....sorta like what I see when I come to Ohio during deer season. Everyone comes to the beaches, the boardwalks, fishing and the casinos. I guess if the state that you live in has a resource that people want, you’ll have tourists/visitors. Luckily, everyone that I’ve met while in Ohio has treated me well...but I do know there are some who dislike non residents. I wish I had the writing skills that Jesse possesses, as I could be a bit more articulate in getting my thoughts across. Basically, if you add up all of the money I spend in Ohio and NJ, plus the costs of hunting gear, licenses, permits, trail cams, etc. I probably average about $100 per pound of meat!😂

More of a non-profit mentality where said revinue would be invested back into the organisation vs a for profit business. Land purchases come to mind.

You guys mistook what I was getting at. I was talking about the petition which I don't believe originated here. Wasn't meaning on here in particular with my comment. I am talking about on social media and forums in general.

I say raise both resident and non resident 100%....if the money is used to buy more state land, improve the habitat on existing land or to hire more wardens. Ohio has some great habitat, why not improve it? It’s a win-win!

I don’t mind paying a little extra for my resident tags. I also think it’s fair if they raise the NR fees a little more. Zero issues with out of state hunters coming here but it should be a little expensive. On the other side of that, if I was going to another state to hunt or fish I would be prepared to drop some cash.

As some have said: TOO in general is very friendly towards Non-Residents... We just might even rate a little better than the local Amish population... Now there is your problem when you touch on the dwindling deer population, yet the original creator of the petition points his finger at Non-Residents... Do you really think I'm driving 8 plus hours to shoot a doe when I can do it in my backyard??? Personally I wish they would pass the following law: IF YOU SHOOT A BUTTON BUCK,YOU MUST TAG IT WITH YOUR BUCK TAG.... After all it did have a set of balls...I don't think you have to worry about Fury or myself putting a dent in YOUR deer herd as neither of us shoot does...Back to the topic of a license increase... Go for it... If I want to hunt Ohio I'll shell out the money... Hell I spent close to $800.00 for tags and license fees in Illinois this year then in Sept. Found out I had some serious health issues... Guess what??? I'm eating that money as I couldn't go... Hope the state spends it wisely....

I would agree with the above. Providing there were provisions in place that the monies could only be used to increase access and opportunity.

I just paid $315 in Texas last week, just part of the game if you want to play.
