Came close to that happening in my family too, Dave. Kids have a lot more pressure on them these days than when I was growing up. I know every generation says that, but it's true. We live in very difficult times and they feel it.
Agree on all counts - give them as much support and love as you can, and try to get them to open up / talk about what's going on in their lives. If they need psychological help, get it for them. Watch for warning signs and don't ignore them (http://jasonfoundation.com/youth-suicide/warning-signs/)
