Raccoon proofing, is it even possible?

I have one that constantly gets in my heavy duty plastic trash can. Chewed a hole in the lid. I set a Connibear trap on top of the trash right below the hole. Next morning trash everywhere,, connibear trap sprung, no coon........bastard. Oh yeah he even had the lid off after i put 2 bungees on it. My wife laughs everytime the trash is everywhere, "your losing to a rodent"
