@bowhunter1023 how often does it get below 0 at your place?
Less than a half dozen days a year, and some years, it never does. This is the cold we used to get when my dad was little, so it's only atypical within the "climate change" era. It was rare to see the Ohio River freeze up from childhood until recent years. This will be the second winter in a row its happened. A lot of folks remember this weather happening Thanksgiving to Christmas back in the day, now winter is 6 weeks later than it was back then. But we're certainly on a "severe" winter trend the fast few years.

Had I brain teaser today, I had a section of my main cold water supply pipe frozen when I woke up in a hollow uninsulated raised floor above a slab that I didn't think would get could enough to freeze. Thawed it out but as soon as the pressure tank emptied no water. All the pipes were thawed. I believe the 1/4in pipe my pressure switch sits on had froze so my well pump wouldn't kick on. I thought my new pump was fried. Glad it's going, we were making plans of moving out until the thaw....

The confluence of the Muskingum and Ohio at 2P today. The Musky is locked up tighter than a snare drum. The big river will be locked up tight by Sunday. Some of the local tugs were breaking ice today, but one of the captains said it'll be impassable by the weekend if it keeps at this pace. It's about as fast as I've seen it lock up since I've been monitoring it closely (15 years now).
