What do you estimate the recovery rate is of deer shot during archery season.
I know some shooters won't fess up - read a report of a study done out west some years ago where they reported a 18% loss rate
 
When I was going to Arizona for Archery Elk they said it was 40% for elk. I wouldn't think deer would be much different. After the hunt they have a mandatory survey where they ask if you hit one and if you recovered it or not. They ask about the size of the elk, approximate location, a number of points etc. When people scour the countryside looking for sheds and deadheads in the spring they have to report the deadheads, Location size etc. So I would say they have a pretty good idea of wound/mortality of lost game.

That seems reasonable. I wonder of those not recovered how many die and how many survive? Or at least survive long enough for another hunter to kill it.

Well i don't think there are too many slob trad hunters - can't say the same for xbow and cpound hunters - just my observation and opinion - the guy behind the bow has to be part of the equation

There aren't many trad hunters at all. As a whole, they make up a very small percentage. But I've also been to an OSTA shoot years ago, from my observation, a good percentage of them have no business shooting at anything alive. :ROFLMAO:

This post is about unrecovered deer that were hit with archery equipment, not which weapon has a higher ratio of slob hunters. Trad equipment is arguably the most limited in terms of margin for error as the other two methods, which, to my point, is one of the reasons for trad hunters contributing to #s. I've met a few "ah, fuck it" stick bow guys in my life, so slobs shoot sticks, too.

Agree but being a good trad archer takes work - i have taught people who have never shot a bow - to accurately shoot xbows and cpounds in a few hours - can't teach judgement - hell jesse has his oldest kid up to speed with a xbow - btw there
is a lot of drink n at osta shoots - one of the best known osta guys is also one of the worst trad shooters

It is almost ALWAYS the Indian and not the arrow. That goes for trad, xbow, compound, shotgun, rifle, muzzy etc.. Basically, "A man's got to know his limitations". I have passed up numerous "questionable" shots at really nice deer over the years, but I can honestly say that I have only had one buck not recovered that was shot with a bow, along with a couple of does. Now I have lost a couple with a gun, and one great buck in particular I am still wondering what happened.

75% of the people you see at OSTA shoots don't hunt or don't hunt with traditional archery equipment. fucking posers.

Geezer, I'm definitely not one of the best trad archers you know. mediocre at the top of my game. I'm pretty damn good at getting close, "easy" shots that I know I can make, though. ;)
