Cam and I had a little time on Saturday to put a few sets in the ground. He put out 8 snares and 2 leg holds targeting coon. I put out 6 coyote sets. 4 flat sets and 2 pipe dreams. Yesterday Cam had 2 coon and 2 opossums; I got skunked. Today he had 1 coon and 1 opossum and I caught a beautiful blonde yote. If anyone has any questions; feel free to ask.

Are using a visual aid and a bait/scent together on your flat sets, or some other method of ensuring you get a passing yote to pay attention? I'm hoping to do a little more trapping this year since I have more flexibility with my schedule.

I like using a small piece of charred wood as a visual. I will try to remember to get a couple pics of my sets tomorrow

The top two pics are both flat sets using a piece of charred wood. They are both set along the edge of a cut running through bean fields. The bottom two are pipe sets. The first one is along a field change next to a farming lane. The other is just off the edge of a farming lane. All sets have both bait and lure added.

We started putting a few sets back out Monday after school and Cam connected on his first red fox of the year today. This is the 3rd year in a row he has caught a fox (first 2 were in snares). I put in the earth anchor, set and bedded the trap and then let Cam take over and finish the set off. This one was caught in a flat set using a piece of charred wood for backing set along a little washout that connects two pieces of timber. Since the fox population is down and they aren’t worth much, we have been releasing all of the fox we have caught the last couple of years. This guy ran away without the slightest of a limp.

All around it, maybe nosed the bait, but didn't catch.
I understand the simple meaning. I like the way he explains things and uses pictures. I was hoping he had some pics of what it looked like after a set was worked over. Maybe see what went wrong. Be able to see if maybe a knee was put down that might of tipped the dog off or something. Or was the trap frozen? I was looking for the reason it didn't work. 3 times tells me it needs more research as to why.

I’d be curious why they may have passed over them as well. I’ve only caught one coyote in a foothold on a farm I have knocked it out of park snaring.

Just bad luck they stepped to the sides of the pan? Something in the set?

It has already been sold. If I get another blonde one, I will let you know.
What do you mean by worked over?
When I mean worked over, A coyote investigated the set. In the flat set, the bait was dug out of the hole and piece of wood drug away from my set. Trap was snapped but no yote. In the pipe set, claw marks where he tried to get in the pipe, trap snapped. Both sets had coyote tracks all around the set. Not sure how I didn’t catch both of them. The one set was a remake from a coyote I caught on Tuesday. They will be back. We are heading out in the morning to redo all the sets after today’s rain. With the colder temps next week, fur should be moving.
