April 15 to May 15 are the dates I use for seeding. Fall is best, but spring works too.

Arborvitea don't have an overly massive root structure. I'd just go with whatever JB recommends though. Lol

As wet as it's been, if it's not holding high water now you're probably in the clear Adam. I would just cut those stumps as close to the ground as possible and leave them in place. Or dig around them slightly and cut them below grade. Arborvitae are a good choice for replacement but if you have a bunch of deer around be ready for the destruction. They fuckin love to wreck arborvitae trees.

Just thought of this thread after mowing on this God forsaken sauna of a day. I managed to take out 1/2 the stumps and get some seed planted. I sprayed the back half in the spring to kill everything, then just let it all grow back. Mowing around the outside is perfect now and it creates a nice little shooting lane to stretch out to 100yrds. Luckily no water issues to date.
