Spring Turkey 2025

I sat the blind with my bow again today. Heard only a couple gobbles and they were way off. I had four hens around me from just after fly down until I left at 10. Any gobbler within earshot heard some great sounding calls from the birds and me… no response. I don’t think I can take too many more mornings like this before I grab a gun and go find one that is ready to end it all. 😀

Sparse gobbling again today. I had one come in completely silent on me first thing. Apparently he liked the tree yelps and fly down cackle I threw out there. He never once gobbled on the limb or the ground so I had no idea he was even around. He crested the hill below me at 40 yds caught me standing there gun shouldered without a chance at making a move. He saw me and that was the end of that lol.

Sat today and didn’t see or hear a single Turkey. Got out around 10:30. Turkey population has really taken a dive in my area. Ten years ago there would’ve been about 100 turkeys roosted in the swamp and it would get real loud with the tree yelps and gobbling. I have no idea what happened to the population but if I don’t see any this week, this may be my last season for a while. Don’t even have pics of any on my trail cams.

George... It's puzzling what has happened to our turkey population... Years ago they were everywhere, I used to sit on my patio and hear them gobbling. Now it's dead silence. Fields I used to see 50 birds in, now nada.. I took a walk last Thurs. to put a camera out.. Tried to get one fired up and nothing.. I'm one step ahead of you and haven't bought a license in a couple years..

I sat the blind again this morning before work. I heard what I assume was the group of six jakes but they were across the road from our place. Mason went to our other farm. He saw seven bearded birds, three of them were jakes. Only one of the gobbled on the roost and none were terribly responsive to his calls. Three of them strutted around in a field. These crazy things are on their own schedule. Most years I only see strutters prior to season. I’m seeing them daily right now. As aggravating as it is, I just keep reminding myself things will improve dramatically for me overnight…someday.
I took down my blind. I’ll put it up at another farm. Mason suggested I set it up where he was this morning but said he didn’t think any of the birds he saw today would go completely stupid on a decoy. He said their temperature just didn’t seem right. For me to get an arrow in one with my single string bow, I need them completely committed and locked down on the dekes. They don’t do that all that often.
I may take a gun out tomorrow and hunt with a friend. And I may just keep hoping a dumb one will let me send an arrow at him. 😀

I used to have them roosting in my front and back yards. They would shock gobble when I slammed my truck door on the way to work in the mornings. I would go out back to the porch and blind call and more times than not, a gobbler would come running up toward the house from the woods. Those days are long gone. I can’t understand how the population could go from what it once was to what it is today. Gotta be multiple causes. I sure hope whatever it is stops and the population can return to what it once was….hell, I’d be happy with half.

George I'm lost for words as to what happened... Division stopped the fall season...Which is good, but that's not a fixall... Can't say we have had bad winters... I'm sure predators have a lot to do with it... Damn fischers have been in my neck of the woods lately... Don't know puzzling to say the least...

My buddy Brian and I had a good morning. I took a gun for the first time in Ohio. I took a 410 loaded w TSS. Killed my bird stone dead at about 40 yards.
