Spring Turkey 2025

Another first today, savannah got her first turkey. We set up first thing on a field i watched a bird strut in yesterday all morning while I was working. It was so windy we couldn't hear a thing. Ended up leaving about 8 to go check another place. We walked to a blind I had set up last deer season hit a call and one gobbled 150 yards away. I told her to get in the blind and I ran to set up the decoys less than 10 minutes later 2 jakes came in to bully the decoys and she shot one at 10 yards. She did a number on the fan but ill patch it back together.
Congratulations to you and your daughter! Awesome!!🦃

I’m done in Kentucky. Just relaxing at the truck while Mason is working a bird within earshot of the truck. It’s nice to listen to while sitting in a comfortable truck. 😀

Any body experiencing Toms ghosting? I got on birds all early last week. They all up and vacated the area, still seeing hens, likely all bred and on nests. But haven't heard a gobble between 3 seperate tracts in a few days.

If you’re seeing hens out and about they probably aren’t on nests full time yet. Which is perfect, it means any day now things will dramatically change for the better from the hunters point of view.

I have not a clue what is going on. Hunting a property Joe and I are very familiar with, including 2 seperate tracts around it. They went crazy a week ago, then nada the past few days. I heard 1 gobble sunday morning.

Happens every year. When they have established the pecking order and gathered their harems, they often don’t say a word. I had a gobbler yelp at me from the roost Sunday. He never did gobble. They get with the hens and all is quiet. What makes a fun hunt is when the hens leave them permanently to sit on the nest. Suddenly the breeder birds have nothing to do and start gobbling again… and getting shot in the face. Every “trophy” bird I’ve killed has been in the third or fourth week of our season. This year our season and the turkeys cycle doesn’t line up well for early success. My Ohio bird was just a brave two year old. There was six or seven in the gang that we called up. Only one of them would gobble but my buddy and I shot two of them. Both young birds and I suspect the other four or five birds were all the same age.

Before season I had six jakes running together on one of our farms. They gobbled at everything. The three or four mornings I hunted that piece were very quiet. I only heard gobbles one morning, and I suspect it was those jakes and they only gobbled on the limb. It was boring as can be. Everyone I’ve talked to has had a quiet season so far… but it will change very soon. The hens lay for 12-15 days before they start to incubate. When the do, it won’t be long before turkey hunting gets exciting again.
