Years past (3rd year running) there was a guy who froze and canned all the extra squirrels. He is in assisted living now and cannot take them. I gladly took his spot for free squirrels. We have already talked about canned squirrels and noodles for the feast next year. The whole idea (Private event) is for a family in need every year.
Teams were told "If you don't feel like cleaning squirrels, Rick will take them for the canner".
glad to hear it, and good for you. once you get used to having canned squirrel on the shelf, it's hard to live without it. ;)

Time running short now with the weather for the next couple of days. I may only make it out for one more hunt before it's over again. The Goof and I headed out to one of my favorite haunts. Decent day to hunt, and the dogs hunted really well for me. Still we only managed 5 squirrels on three drops. Lots of obvious dens and mostly not lots of tracks in the snow except for a few areas. I did not fire a shot today, and The Goofs shooting was good enough. I skinned the only five we saw. Hunker down tomorrow, taking Nancy on Thursday to have her ankle operated on again to remove all of the hardware that is useless now and only causing her a lot of pain. Try again in a few days or so.

Nancy recovering from surgery, which went just fine. Dogs are freaked out by the crutches, driving her crazy. She just wants to rest and be left alone, lol. The pot lickers and I took a walk this morning for a couple of hours. I think there was a squirrel in every tree they went to today which was a total of 8. A few leaf nests, a couple of obvious holes, and one that they were very hot on that I just could not find squirrel. I saw a total of three very uncooperative squirrels, and they are all in the freezer now. Dogs both hunted well today, and nobody got electrocuted, either. :D Slick got two and Lefty got one, but if I counted all the other trees we went to that dogs were very sure of, it was probably even. Nice hunt; short and sweet. We go one more time next week.

Great pic! Slick giving Lefty the look lol.
yea, right. those two are like peas and carrots. They play pretty aggressively sometimes (scares Nancy :D), but they have always gotten along exceedingly well. Kinda like brothers, even though they are not. They have not really ever had a dominance struggle. We had a little trouble on trees for a while because Lefty is super jealous, but we are past that now. I'm the alpha male in this pack and I never let them forget that. Has kept the peace quite nicely for as long as Slick has been here. Lefty did challenge me over a dead squirrel one time when he was two or three. He tried very seriously to bite me and clocked him square in the face with my fist hard enough to knock him down. He has never tried to take a squirrel from me since. He just tears them up before I can reach him or electrocute him, lol.

Weather not fabulous today, and worse than predicted. We got wet, but some squirrels were out in the small woodlot we went to today for the last hunt of the season and both dogs put on a clinic. It's hard to complain about killing seven squirrels in less than two hours on a shitty weather day at the end of January. We've had many rousing "last hunts" of the season, had a few duds, too. This one lands someplace squarely between those two and is a microcosm of the entire season. I was not able to put nearly as much into this as I have in the past for a variety of reasons. Still, we killed a bunch of squirrels. I got to bring along a couple TOO members for the first time and keep my annual hunt date with Brock and Mason. I left a dreadful amount of unfinished business in the deer woods this season, but just a little bit in the squirrel woods. With much of what has kept me from my normal hunting pace behind me, I say that things are going to be different this year (next season). I'm usually happy it's over by this time of year, but for the first time in a very long time, I am not. I simply have not had enough yet. No matter as it is over now, but I'm glad I got out as much as I did, really.

Both dogs made three trees. Slick lucked into a double on one of his. I think we only went to two empty trees today.

Love the change of attitude as this one comes to an end. I hope Nancy is doing well on her recovery as well as yourself. Deer hunting is stupit, so don't carry that on your shoulders. As always, awesome fucking job on this thread and thanks for bringing us along!

Yes, we sure will. Have you eaten of your canned squirrel yet?
May have been in a text, but sent you a message..... Canned Squirrel Is It! Not sure I'd ever fry one again. We ate yours and one of ours already. Done a Philly Cheese Steak Hamburger Helper type dish and used squirrel instead of hamburger.... Was better than we even expected.

Ha! Awesome. Do you have a recipe for canned squirrel gravy? Canned squirrel makes superb tacos, too.
