Dustin if I was you I would go with the 223 chambering. You are right down the road from me and I have 223 set ups to reload any 223 loading you want. You will be able to load any weight bullet, more accurate than factory, at a lower price, and no function problems.
Never bought a 223 factory round and hunted PD's in the west for 15 yrs. My 2 (son) self built AR's will shoot sub 1" groups all day at 100 yds. with 100% function. I use metal GI used mags only and never had a problem with them in 20 yrs. And they have shot 10,000's of rounds since I got them used.
I won't start a 223 vs 5.56 chamber argument. But will say if you seen it on the internet forget it.

Im am definitely looking for 1/7 or 1/8 twist rate. Also will go with the 5.56 chamber as well. Im going to start out with the Magpul MBUS flip up sights, then later attach another sight. I will be going with the flat top upper as well. Just have to find one that I like.

Their is one positive to having matching manufacturers for your upper and lower....resale.

If you are not worried about that then carry on.

My lower should be here tomorrow some time. Yesterday I ordered my upper from Palmetto State Armory. Also ordered the BCG through them as well. Ill be looking at Vortex for my red dot. I can tell this is going to be an expensive hobby, I already know that I have expensive taste. LOL

Start buying match barrels and great triggers....that is when it starts getting expensive.

Plus, all the little things add up:

Optic
Sling
Sling swivels
QD attachments
Better charging handle
ETC...

Do you have a suggestion for a lower parts kit that comes with the match trigger? And a quality charging handle? Ive been looking at BCM for their charging handle.

PSA has lower kits with no trigger group included.

Then you can get whatever you want. Someone had the POF trigger for $150 right now.

Also, the RRA National Match LPK that is a good, inexpensive two stage trigger.

PSA also makes a lower parts kit that has upgraded QMS and ACT triggers for ridiculously cheap. Not great but much better that mil-spec. I put the JP springs in mine. Great, cheap trigger.

I saw the JP springs, that will probably be another purchase on the growing list. LOL. Thanks for all of the info.

For an all purpose AR the ALG triggers are a great value. I have one of them and also the more expensive Geisselle ones in a few of mine and to me the difference (after using both) is probably not woth the cost.

G and R tactical carries Colt LPK without a trigger group and you can choose between the ALG or Geisselle triggers in the package. I have also used the PSA kit Beentown mentioned above. White Oak Armament also has good prices on their LPK.

I can see everything until this one, reason you would need a better charging handle would be? Is it an optics issue? Interference?

The BCM and Rainier ones also have a different mechanism for releasing the handle which changes how the torque is applied making it stronger but then again I have not broken a normal one yet either....but I could see it if you have too mortar out a round.

When using a scope the bell somewhat interferes with reaching the CH.

When setting it up would a higher mount be cheaper than replacing the charging handle? If you have to buy a set of rings anyway the cost difference I would think would be cheaper in the mount vs the handle.... What do you think?

I do both. On an AR you have to have higher rings for proper eye alignment and clearance for the objective.

Even though the scope is higher it can still be a pain in the ass to reach the CH which is usually just under the ocular bell.

Speaking of optics, what's everyones opinions? Two different versions.... 1. SHTF optic with an add on open sight option? 2. Hitting groundhogs/yotes ant 200 yards?

On my SHTF rifle i have fixed opens and a red dot. On my precision i have a 4-16x vortex. Out to 200 yards a smaller 1-2moa red dot can work but isnt easy.

What is your budget for the optic?
