Off season training has been in full swing since January. Been running and lifting like crazy. Just went on a 30 mile hike with 7000 ft of gain and a 50 pound pack on Saturday with some buddies. We were supposed to do 20 on Sunday but we were up high on Mt. St. Helens and a huge storm whipped our tents around all night and soaked us in the morning so we booked it back 4.5 miles to the trucks. Most people had fancy gear with pack weights of 25-35 pounds. I was stuck with 50 pounds since I haven’t been able to afford the top quality stuff yet.

Been getting in some long runs as well.

Two weeks ago I finally bought a left handed bow because I’m left eye dominant. 5 deer and 4 turkeys missed with a bow last year was more than enough motivation. I got a used 80# Hoyt Helix Ultra. I’m slowly working my way into shape with it. Groups are great at 20 but I haven’t moved back from there yet.

I just graduated at the top of my class with a double major in Chemical and Environmental Engineering. Sadly with covid all of the entry level jobs have closed for the past few months. I’m stuck staying at my dads and applying for anything I can find all across the west.

I’ve got enough saved up that I can still hunt a lot in September. Based on what I’m seeing I should have a job my October.

Current hunt schedule:

Arizona opener: August 21
Oregon opener: August 29
Arrive in NM: September 3
Washington opener: September 15ish

Oregon and NM should definitely happen but AZ and WA or dependent upon timing of a few things and getting a job lined up.

Good luck fellers!

That's awesome, man! Congrats! Hopefully things will get back to normal soon with the job market.

Damnit Tanner! Well done!!!!

I’ve been following your fishing adventures as well. Was that a tiny Ling the other day off the surf? I’m sure others would love to see those also. You are living a life most of us dream of! Keep it up and update us when you can. Or at least text me pics😂.

I think it was just a little sculpin but I guess it might’ve been a baby ling?

Spent today out scouting some elk spots in Washington, lifting, running and shooting. While scouting I watched a bobcat pounce on a grouse and miss it.

Today’s gameplan: bike in four miles to the head of two big drainages in washington. Hike my ass off looking for trails, bedding areas and rubs for coastal Roosevelt elk. Then maybe run some logging roads to other areas if I’ve still got energy left

Antelope icons are benches, saddles and points that look elky. I’ll change the icons if I find something good there.

Scouted last night. First ridge I headed down was way too steep. The second someone had freshly taken a machete down for a half mile plus and left trash everywhere. A local cop buddy told me to back out in case it was an illegal pot grow.

The second clear cut I scouted I ran into elk and found a nice bedding area.

The third clear cut I came around the corner to see a few cows, a few calves and a couple young bulls.

I also ran into one of these lil buggers.

5.5 mile run to check two cams on my way home from the airport. Ran into a herd of cows and calves and chased them past the cam. At least two legal bulls (3 point or better) on the cams and plenty of bear pics.

I've been trying to locate a cheap video camera to take on all of these hunts this year but haven't found anything. I might just film with my phone and make it work.
Just interviewed for a job in Lander, WY so I might be making a big move here in the near future.

Job in Wyoming canceled the position... oh well.

Buddy just got back from scouting our spot in oregon. I’m hoping to head there this weekend. A lot of the elk will move out of the high country before season but in two days he saw 44 bulls and 17 bucks. 4 bulls with 7 point sides and 2 of the bucks were giants. No pics of the deer.

The one bull has a sweet drop tine.

Yesterday morning I put in 21.4 miles of biking and hiking to different spots in Washington scouting. Found some great spots and what probably was another drug hideout.

I drove 8.5 hours to eastern Oregon and packed in to scout for a few days. I got in a little before midnight and saw a new email saying I had to hike back out the next day to get home for a Skype interview two days later. I glassed in the morning and saw a lot of bucks then packed out and headed home.

I ended up getting the job, and am officially moving to Laramie, Wyoming! I’m moving all of my stuff out this week, then driving back to Oregon to scout for three days before the opener. The job starts September 14th so I will be missing the AZ and WA hunts I was planning.
