Had a close encounter with a doe and two yearlings Friday evening down in Jackson Co. When I found a bunch of acorns on a ridge top that had a few scrapes and deer dropping all around I set up nearby with my climber. Around 6:00 I heard movement coming from the pines behind me and to my left, I turned my head and saw legs moving my way. About the same time that I saw them they stopped and stood still for about a minute or so. I was seated and my bow was still hanging on a hook on the tree. I was afraid to move. There was very little wind and the woods was quiet.
Finally they slowly walked closer to the acorn covered scrape but they were very cautious with every step. Through the fall colored leaves of the oaks and maples I could see glimpses of three deer. By this time they were only 15 yards or so from my tree when I finally was able to determine that the second one in line was a doe, with her two yearling fore and aft.
When the doe and one of the yearling got to the scrape they suddenly locked up and jumped back about 10 yards or so. I don't knew if they smelled me or smelled were I walked earlier when I came upon the scrape. For a full half hour they stood around motionless or moving ever-so slightly between the scrape and the edge of the pines. They never did stomp, snort or do the head-bob thing but were on high alert the whole time.
At one time I was able to grab my bow and eventually I even managed to stand up, all the while they milled around in the trees nearby. There was a time when the doe finally presented me with a shot but one of the yearlings was too close for me to risk drawing my bow. At one point the yearling came back to the scrape and began crunching acorns for a few minutes before it too got jumpy and scampered off and quick stepped it back towards the pines. They eventually all slowly slipped back into the pines, never to be seen again.
So close!!!
