Hard pass on paying for landowner permits, too. I pay enough fucking taxes already and one of the benefits of owning land is not having to pay to hunt on it.

I don't disagree and would say that in any good negotiation, you incorporate things that you will concede on, or that you offer in "good faith". Consider this a good-faith offer to NRs who think I'm always picking on them ;)

We cannot change other people or many things in this life, but we all have the power to change ourselves.

I have given @Gern186's comments altering our standards and expectations a lot of thought in the last 12 hours. There are indeed external influences that have altered the real-world environment in a way that is counter to my standards and expectations, but shame on me for not remembering the words of Epictetus.

“Every event has two handles, one by which it can be carried, and one by which it can’t. If your brother does you wrong, don’t grab it by his wronging, because this is the handle incapable of lifting it. Instead, use the other—that he is your brother, that you were raised together, and then you will have hold of the handle that carries.”

It will take time and more contemplation, but I will eventually find the other handle when it comes to my hunting journey...

And that is exactly why I got a squirrel dog 12 years ago. I got so sick and tired of all of the stupid bullshit I had to put up with trying to bow hunt deer for four months that it was not as enjoyable as it once was, so I decided to take up a different late season hunting activity. One of the smartest and most enjoyable decisions I ever made.

I know it's a defeatist attitude but just changing ourselves won't amount to much. We could even create a counter DNR org to educate hunters on changing themselves, but even then that's like trying to start a group that advocates driving 55mph even though the speed limit is 70mph. It just wouldn't work. Plus I'd probably get threatened with a lawsuit and a call to my employer again like last time I started down that path. 😂

I haven’t watched the podcast, I don’t have that kind of time in my life. However to the point I agree that we are in an unstoppable spiral, and fear the loss of what I do, spending entirely too much time in the woods thinking I’m a mountain man.
Ive always supportive and happy for anyone that is out hunting in any manner that legal. However If we are throwing crystal ball wishes. Likewise, id ban baiting, crossbows need restrictions similar to noted by others or its own season. Increase on NR along with a buck tag draw for Non Residents And yep I’d cut a month out of the season.

I would like to see an increase on NR liences and tags. I would also like to see a ban on corn. The only reason is, I have seen people dump gravity wagons and dump trailers full of corn at one time. that's not good for the animals once it turns moldy, and it will. It also creates close contact for any sickness any animal may have.

Any and all changes made will take effect to limit or eliminate the main reasons hunting has been popular for the last hundred years or so. And this happening at the very time that returning to it's roots will be most important. As the economy heads deeper into depression people will be forced to fend more for themselves as their gods in Government let them down. This will lead back to depending on one another and the need to gather your own food and resources. But your gods in Government will have enacted the laws to prevent you from doing this in the name of protecting the resources...

90% of the State and Federal lands they control came from the forfeiture of private citizen property due to their inability to pay fees and taxes to the gods in Government back in the last Great Depression 90 years ago. At that same time the gods in Government also confiscated the wealth of most men thanks to the laws that forbid citizens from owning most gold coins. They paid $25 bucks an ounce in paper fiat currency for the gold, arrested a few for hoarding to make their point, then immediately revalued gold to 35 bucks an ounce to transfer an extra 40ish $% to the gods in Government coffers, from our hard working grand parents.

Today, the gods in Government know to the penny what Joe and Jane Lunchbox have in their retirement accounts as proven by that annual IRS form 5398 you get each spring and wonder if your tax preparer needs to see it. Soon we will see a benefit proposal along the lines of fixing Social Security and guarantying our retirement income stream by transferring those retirement account balances out of harms way from Capitalistic stock and bond markets into the safety of US Government Security with the promise of much better monthly stipends from our gods in Government...

Personally I'm investing in good camo, base metals like lead and brass, physical maps and compass and Irish Diplomacy myself. Carpe Diem!

(I typed this slowly so some would have the time to contemplate the message... LOL )

If you qualify for a youth license = You can use any archery equipment deemed legal.

Nonresident deer (Buck) tags = Lottery system. Antlerless tags over the counter. No outfitters allowed to offer tags.

Baiting = banned.

Season dates = First Saturday of October. 5 day early muzzleloader season, Last week of October, buck only and only during leap years. (This would ruffle some feathers) 😂

I agree that changing ourselves won’t have much affect on the big picture, but what I mean is that we need to adapt to keep enjoying deer hunting or figure out ways to get what we need from our deer hunting under whatever circumstances we face.

If we are going to make this about bucks, let's make this about bucks.

1. Youth/elder/disabled can use any legal weapon any day of the season.

2. Buck can only be harvested from November 1st thru December 7th.

3. Antlerless season October 15th thru January 1st.

4. If we are banning bait, let's also ban food plots. Sorry everyone, habitat is gonna have to be the draw to your property.

5. No real time cameras. It is illegal for me to use walkie talkies, this is no different.

6. NR need some kind of restrictions. Point system or something. We are getting overrun as residents.

7. NR are under fire again, no antlerless. Order half a cow and support your local farmer.

8. Public land (state or federal) should be 1 deer. Any deer, just 1 per hunter.

9. Proxy hunting for disabled/elder. No antlered deer with brow tines can be taken if proxy hunting.

10. Ban damage permits. You have a deer problem, let some hunters in. Perfect use of proxy permits.

Define income. How much do I have to make and to whom do I have to sell it?
I have not put that much thought into it. My purpose of this is to create more habitat for all animals to use. Reduce the varmints overpopulation. This also reduces the nose to nose transmission of disease and sickness.

Certainly a lot to unbox there. Might make a good topic for another thread. I'm probably going to force you to think about it 😂

I think this is a pretty good list. Only problem I have is #6….not for me, but it has to have some kind of clause for people who used to be residents and moved out of state. People come home to hunt with family and they shouldn’t be restricted. If you were an Ohio resident at some point in your life, you should be allowed to come “home” to hunt. Annual deer camp is as much a holiday to some of us as Christmas or thanksgiving.

Love it. Good idea.

I thought for sure you were going to bring up NRs who own land in Ohio. I think a clause for that is needed as well. Just with a minimum amount of acres. Something along the lines of, you must own 30+ acres to qualify under the resident laws. On top of this, you will be required to obtain a hunting license and proper tags.

This is how negotiations and public web boards work. Let's work on it. I am surprised that is what you picked out of my list of 10😅
It was the most illogical 😉

You made some suggestions I'd not ever contemplated, and that's what this thread needed.

I agree with this. Maybe place a minimum years of residency, like 5-10 and create that category of license.

So i take offense to the ban crossbows portion.

I am able bodied and per most of you (and myself) capable of shooting a vertical bow. However i know i am not capable of putting in the time and effort to become appropriately effective with it. So i choose a crossbow to allow me additional days afield when i choose outside of gun season. I have actually experienced some of the cool factor you guys talk about during the rut which to me was amazing and I'd never seen it before.

But if you forced me to go vertical I'd either only gun hunt (best ethical and moral decision) or can you imagine the number of wounded and nonrecovered deer all the crossbow hunters would make if they were forced to go vertical only?

To me, many of these solutions are only true solutions if you also implement MANDATORY education for bow hunters and gun hunters that has an emphasis on shot selection and placement. Didn't Rick talk about some new hunter that is on her 4th buck shot and not recovered? How many of those will make it to next season?
