The Silver Lab Debate...

Lol... Well not exactly because poodles are at least athletic. They're more like the kids who run track instead of playing baseball. 😎

I wasn't going to comment on this thread. . .until now. Lol. Guarantee many of those track runners physically push their bodies harder than baseball players. At least the successful ones. Plenty of pudgy baseball players out there (at high School level). Not exactly "athletic".

Who said anything about what kind of dog was smarter? Talk about Pandora's box...

I've been privy to 3 great dogs in my life: AKC Doberman, AKC Chocolate Lab and the dog that rivals them both, was by best guess, 1/2 Rottweiler, 1/4 Lab and a 1/4 German Shepard. I'm not questioning whether purebreds or mutts are smarter because that is determined on a dog-by-dog basis. The debate is about standards and the adherence to, or not, of the breed standard. I will agree with you that a driver to the breed standard is $. After all, $ is the root of all evil right?!?

My intent was to convey how absurd it is to correlate breed standard to the abilities of a working dog. And to further state that the primary reason for the strict adherence that you see in competitions is largely related to breeding royalties. Breed standards are nothing more than looks, makes sense for bench dogs, worthless for working dogs.

Breed standards that relate to things other than color are important . These are the reasons that working dogs are able to do their job in an efficient manner.

There a snobs in all aspects of life, my sport is a real sport, your sport is a lesser sport. My Chevy is better than your Ford, (this one is true for sure). My sport team is better than your team, only bow hunters are real hunters, wait compound or recurve. I have nothing against purebred dogs, hell that is why I am looking at a lab, just think it is nuts how people get about if this one can show, or if it is real.

I’m no authority, but breeds were created for a reason. Breeds are categorized by tendencies. You are not likely to have a mutt that will chase rabbits like a well bred beagle. You will not get the best of beagles to retrieve ducks like a lab. It isn’t going to happen. You can work with a beagle for years to get him to fetch or you can spend an afternoon with a lab that will surpass the super-beagle. The standards are not just based on appearance. Blood lines have been developed over centuries. Generally speaking, for good reason. Pure bred dogs, as a whole, are smarter than mutts. To think otherwise is foolish... and I’ve had my fair share of mutts that I loved dearly.

I don't disagree however I also know that many a people have left the woods with worthless AKC papers and one less 22.

Being that I'm new to the lab family I have a question.

If silver labs are inferior does that also apply to the white as it's a color variant of a yellow?

The way I see it any color other then chocolate, black, and yellow are one offs. Still a lab but have other added health issues. I know white dogs in general have a higher risk of skin issues and allergies. I don't know if there are higher risks for silver color dogs.

Inferior is a strong word, but I get what your asking. And no, traditionally, lighter "white" colored labs are not under the same scrutiny genetically speaking as are silver. Totally different set of genetic circumstances that lead to the coat color. My only issue with Lulu, who is about as white as it gets, is that she sheds unbelievably bad. Her skin is healthy, but shit, it's a nonstop supply of white hair around here!
