Giles I have to drive right by where you live. I come down 72 into Hillsboro and hunt a little south of there. I would be glad to take you with me a day. My first week is booked but after that im pretty open. I hunt AROUND 15 -16 Days each spring and after years of chasing them I really enjoy taking others now.

I love bow hunting deer but turkey hunting comes in a close second, this will be my 32nd season chasing them and like Brock said lots of fun and it is fun to call a lot just to hear them gobble as that is the best part, hearing them. Some will run right in no matter how loud or much you call but most of the older birds I will work with very soft calling and use a stick to scratch the leaves by me to imitate a hen feeding. I have taken guys with me and set them 10 or 15 yds in front of me and worked birds and they say sometimes they wondered why I wasn't calling when I was, that is how soft I call sometimes. Seems to work on those older or pressured birds.
But then again I have called constantly like an excited hen and had gobblers about run me over. Give it a try you will enjoy it.

I like hearing em...and the 930 nap in the woods. Other than that, I could kill about one more to do a full body mount and that would do me.
Yep I know right where you are. I hunt a few spots in the Hillsboro area. I hunt a lot of weekdays, weekends are tough with family. My job allows me to slip out through the week. Let me know, we will get on them! Disclaimer, you will be hooked and this will end up costing some money. you will undoubtedly end up buying your own decoys, calls, maybe a new gun haha
I've been lucky enough to have the past few years without working. So all my days are pretty open, haha. Pretty sure I'm gonna have to get back into JOB this summer though.

Giles i may take you up on that squirrel offer next year, I haven't been on a decent squirrel hunt in years, due to the fact a lot people feel like it messes up deer hunting.
They are a stupid bird with great survival instincts . They'll humble you pretty quick , and they can be pretty fun to hunt . Unpressured birds are easy to hunt and readily patternable . It doesn't take much pressure to turn them into a different critter .

Those Turkeys in your yard will get a lot smarter as soon as you start trying to kill that Tom, Giles, I promise...
It's a blast honestly. We have local birds that we hunt and we can't really roost them. I mean we can, but they head straight for the feeders in the yards most mornings. We're better off waiting until mid morning and trying to call a Tom in that has worked over the feeding hens. That's how I know those local birds might be dumb, but they don't want to die... BTW, we've never gun hunted them either, and I'm glad we didn't. I love doing it with the bow, only way for me. I really want to get into some woods where I can scout and roost a bird, but we have plenty of fun around here chasing our local gobblers, so it's hard to justify getting out and putting in the extra leg work required to adequately kill a good bird. Which btw, our season's here are stupid. Broken into weeks, M-F, and then Saturdays are what we call week E. It's a lottery system and you can only hunt until 12, unless it's week D which is the last two M-F of the year, then it's all day. But our permits are even further stupid by breaking the state into zones which are pretty small. Like I said, makes going into another zone very difficult to justify when I have local birds that have outsmarted us before. Last year was just a very good year for us....

Glad we just have a statewide season and general tags . That is crazy how complicated it is .
I was just talking last night about the gun vs bow thing with a buddy . He and i both were in agreement that we'd rather gun em down . I guess my turnoff about bowhuntin em is sitting in a blind . I'd rather just rather run and gun and be mobile . Pretty exciting just sitting at the base of a tree .

you should watch impala's videos then it they're the same ones he posted last spring. THey did it w/o a blind.

Yea, we shot one through the blind and then quickly realized I wasted over $100 on a blind.... We killed two birds last year without a blind. It can be done....
Im new on here and relatively new to turkey hunting but it is a rush when you hear that gobbler at a distance headin your way. I love deer hunting but i would almost say turkey huntings more fun because YOU are calling them in, not waiting on one to pass by. As far as calling goes just get a simple box or slate call to start and look up as many videos as you can on how to call. No technique will be the same but the cadence is the biggest thing. I practiced so much my family members were about to shoot me if i made one more cluck in the house! Just stick with it and you will enjoy it. Best of luck to you...
