Toledo city Water

We couldn't find any water in waterville or whitehouse, ended up using a water shed in grand rapids...there are 7 in our area...lucked out and knew somebody in tiffin that got 10gals and 10cases for us...

Heating some bottled water now to clean the kids sippy cups...not sure if i'm going to shower today or not.

Does anyone know where the city of oregon gets their water from? How were they able to avoid this?
there are two types of ways city's get water. Either surface water draws like Toledo or a well field. Lots of towns use well fields. The two characteristics are very different treatment wise.

Oregon gets their water from the same place Toledo does. Oregon has a system that works.

And pound the governors phone lines and push every button imaginable to make them force the farmers to clean up their act.

Good luck. While I feel for our members up north that are without water, a small part of me says it's just a taste of the Norths own medicine. Why you might ask? I'm southern and grew up close to the coast. Welcome to our hell that we call red tide, luckily we don't get our drinking water from the gulf and the only thing it's impacted is tourism, people means of life, and our coastal beauty. Farm runoff and increased phosphorus levels have been killing the gulf for decades. It's all but destroyed large sections along the coast of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. It's created a dead zone stretching 6,600 square miles where in most areas reduced oxygen levels are so low nothing can survive. Algae blooms are just another summer along southern coasts. The southern coastal states have bitched about it for over a decade. The reconstruction attitude is still alive and well however and nothing has been done. Compared to what's happened to the gulf this is a minor situation caused by the same problem, but now that it's happened to the north maybe something will change.

This just shows how unprepared people are. If anyone needs water my neighbors are still on a well and I can hook you up. If this is going to last more than a couple days I will retie into my wells and have plenty of water for those in need.

Grand Lake St. Mary's is lake Erie on a smaller scale.....look what they have delt with there for the past decade or more. Enviromentalists have been pointing to that situation there and sounding the warning bells regarding Erie for years, but nobody has listened.

Swanton is on a split system, most of the "town" is supplied by the local res, the outlying areas are supplied by the Toledo system(me). I know of more than a few people who are on wells or the Swanton system and they still went out and bought 30+ cases of water even though they don't need it. They should be ashamed of themselves!!

I don't consider myself a "prepper" but I am prepared to deal with stuff like this. doubt anybody is laughing at me now.

Another thing. If I hear one more talking head describe "potable" water as "portable" water I am going to go postal!!!

BTW Oregon draws their water from the lake just like Toledo and their intakes are not that far apart. The difference is in the quanities drawn. Oregon's system is far smaller so they are not treating nearly as much and can more easily add a step (in this case activated carbon) to their process to eliminate this toxin. Make no mistake this is some nasty shit and there are only a few effective ways to remove it.

I am no expert but did some online reserch yesterday to see what exactly is going on. If the newsjackoffs don't know the difference between portable and potable I really don't trust a word that comes out of their pieholes.

I didn't think activated carbon would remove the microcystin from the water. I thought only micro filtration (like reverse osmosis) would remove it... which just isn't feasible at any large scale like a community water supply.

Nope you're right Randy... I guess powdered activated carbon (PAC) in combination with microfiltration is indeed effective in removing the toxins.

I think the D in D mike collins stands for douchecanoe! I've been washing my hands with cold water since saturday.

We bathed our 3 toddlers in a tub on our deck last night...It was like camping at home.

my son was so excited to see the fire trucks when I told him we were going to the fire dept. to get water...lemonade out of lemons!!

i know you guys are pizzed off but its not the mayors fault. You need to consider a lot of factors into how you got here. its easy to blame the guy in charge now but he was more than likely handed the position by previous mayors many years ago. LOTS of politicians like to pass the buck onto the next guy. Plus i doubt you would like where your water bill would be heading if you demanded such action be taken. I bet it would more that double if not triple.

They say drink up but don't worry about flushing your systems. What the toxins are OK to drink now. Wtf?

I'm glad you guys are supposed to be good to go again!

I think my next "off the grid" project is going to be putting in a hand pump well. Being without water, even just during a power outage, is a pain.

I don't blame him at all, its no surprise in this area that the water plant has been mis managed for decades...the city has been considering off loading it to a private company for quite awhile now TOO....He is just a douchecanoe, plain and simple.

What he did to piss me off was to say the water was not safe when the EPA testing said it was fine. He is a former cop turned polititian. Unless he has some degree in water treatment/mangement that he has not shared with anyone he does not have the edjumacation to make that call. I think he was making political hay from this situation. He can get fugged.
