Trapping Season 2025-2026

Young female by the back foot this morning. Heading down south to check my coon sets.

Had a heck of a last check today as we pulled our beaver and otter traps.

I caught a raccoon on my first otter set of the line. The 2nd otter set was untouched. And then the 3rd otter set, a submerged 330 body grip on a fresh levee crossover slide, had fired but was empty. As steep as the slope of the slide was, I’m guessing an otter just simply torpedoed through the trap faster than it could catch him. Otters are slick like that sometimes. That’s kind of a disadvantage to the 330 as an otter trap… it’s just a little slow because of its size. I’ve heard 280’s are the ideal body grip for trapping otters, but I don’t have any of those yet.

We made our way over to the beaver lodge and that’s where we really made some hay. My castor mound set on the end of the lodge caught its second beaver in two days, a 25 lb kit. Then two of the main runs that I set, with body grips, each caught a muskrat of all things. But my final trap, a 330 set in a pinch point off to the side of the lodge, popped the big Bertha… a 62 lb adult female. My biggest beaver to-date. What a fun day with the kids and a great way to cap off beaver season.

I can smell that skinning shop! Doesn't get much better than that!
