It's funny how things work out. I went into a patch of public to hunt the bird I've chased the last few hunts. I gave him ten solid minutes, he didn't gobble, so I left. I had told another local fella about the birds I had been watching on my neighbor's place, which adjoins another big public tract. He told me last night that he had gone after one of them Sunday morning but goofed it up. He told me that last night at a baseball game. So, I jokingly said, "You know I'm going to go kill him now, right"? He laughed and said he wouldn't have known they were even in there if I hadn't told him. Ha. I'm certain this is probably the same bird that gave me and Mason the slip on the Saturday of Youth season. He was henned up then, apparently was not today.
We have not even been out to the "gar hole" farm since youth season. It usually gets pretty hot on that place by the second or third week of season, so I'm looking forward to Mason shooting that place up. We have a "youth hunt" scheduled on Paint Creek for this Saturday, so we will hit it first thing. Mason killed a dandy over there last year. We have killed four birds in there on five morning hunts... I like our chances.
