Safety Useful Safety Sayings and Reminders for the Sportsman

Always keep a first aid kit for yourself in your pack but when in the field with mans best friend remember them as well....

Interesting thought J - what kinda extras for dogs?

Antibiotic ointment, and they sell these sticks that you rub on wounds (small ones) and it clotts the cut..... Had a beagle years back that would look like she was in a blood bath, her ears would bleed so bad every white patch on her would be solid red..... These sticks (silver nitrate) would basically cauterize (sp) it on contact and no more bleeding for a while.... I keep nail clippers in it too remove thorns from the feet and face area which have come in handy over the years as well.... Although when we had that mishap with the current older female nothing I had would of helped, other then wrapped her in a blanket and put the heater on hi heat to keep her warm and comfortable and try to prevent shock.... which didn't work anyways...... Bandages really don't help due too the fact they don't like them and will pull/chew them off.....

BRIGHAM CITY, UTAH -- A duck hunter is recovering from minor wounds he suffered when he was shot in the buttocks by his partner's dog over the weekend, law enforcement authorities said on Thursday.

The 46-year-old man, who was not identified, was out hunting on Sunday with a friend and his friend's dog, a yellow Labrador retriever named Pipper, near the Bear River Bird Refuge in the northern section of the Great Salt Lake, about 10 miles west of Brigham City, officials said.

The two hunting partners had stopped their boat in a marsh area where their duck decoys were placed to retrieve a duck they had shot, and the man laid his 12-gauge shotgun across the bow of the vessel and stepped into the shallow water.

"The dog jumped into the boat and was stepping over the shotgun and made it discharge somehow.

The guy was still walking away from the boat and he took it in the buttocks," said Box Elder County Sheriff Chief Deputy Kevin Potter.

The men called 911 and walked to a nearby road to wait for emergency assistance to arrive.

The stricken hunter was taken to Brigham City Hospital, where medical personnel removed 27 shotgun pellets from his backside. He was released a short time later.

"The direction your muzzle is pointing and all elements around add to whether accidents happen or not," Sergeant Mitch Lane of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources told Reuters.

Lane said the incident sounded like a "fluke" but stressed gun safety is important at all times.

"The other agencies did the investigation immediately after the incident, but we will follow-up and do a report on what they found," Lane said.

Dont pee on a fence! It might be an electricifing (sp) experience!

Even though common sence isnt common anymore, find some and use it!

DO NOT SHOOT AT SOUND!

Dont put up a tree stand without assembling it all the way, and dont attempt to climb it without attaching the middle support, and dont turn around and sit in it untill it is strapped to the tree at the top as well.. A guy at work didnt do all 3, he was installing a double for him and his daughter to sit in and he didnt put the support bars from the seat to the ladder on it. He and a buddy of his pushed it up to the tree and he climbed right up turned around and sat down, and it collasped cause of the missing supports. His daughter and his buddy watched him fall 16 feet. Luckly for him he will be fine but he still has trouble lifting his right arm above his head 3 weeks later.

BE SAFE YOU ARE YOUR OWN WORST ENEMY! IF IT DONT FEEL RIGHT DONT DO IT!

Whenever I pick up a shotgun I always look at the safety first, my quick reminder is "Red You're Dead." If I see red I know the gun can discharge. I'm constantly doing this in the field after firing a shot to double check to make sure I put it back on safe, or after walking through brush to make sure nothing pushed the safety off.
