Great story, but any ideas as to why still in velvet? Did you get a ball pic? There has to be a reason he was still in velvet.

Man, outstanding deer and outstanding the way this has helped you be home with family. Lots of great news with this one beyond the deer of a lifetime.

Incredible deer. Like you eluded to, normally testosterone is what triggers them to peel velvet. So it’s really strange... if he had a hormonal issue, that he still had enough ambition to chase a doe. My guess is that was a fluke chase though. I bet he didn’t exhibit most of the rut related behaviors. He had to have been avoiding sparring with other bucks all season.

That’s a good point...never thought of that. He likely never rubbed or tended scrapes either.

Knowing I'd have the time to sit down and enjoy reading this today while in my tree-stand, all I can say, what an icrediable hunt, and your write up, just excellent!

Congratulations once again on a true treasure of a buck!

I too was simply astonished when I first saw your post that he's still in full velvet this late into the year. Truly amazing and what a stud of a deer!

Well done all the way around.

That is a very cool buck! I have no desire to shoot an early season velvet buck. I get excited when I start seeing hard horns. But a buck that keeps his velvet.... that’s a true trophy!
