Well my deer hunting is over for the season. As I told @JOHNROHIO on Saturday I was going to do. I contacted Vortex warranty center to get both of my bino's looked and repaired or whatnot. I'll keep this thread up.

Older Diamondback 8.5x50s - bought through a deal someone on here shared. I Love them because its the right amount of zoom for Ohio hunting. Eye cups come off and can unscrew and are showing their age.

Newer (still a few couple of years old) Viper 10x40s. - Smaller and was part of a cabelas black friday deal. I really like them and they are definitely a step up from the diamondbacks but 10 is almost too much for hand held use for me. Too shaky for some work.

It’s been close to 10 years ago now, but I dropped a pair of Diamond Backs out of my climber and they landed on what had to be the only rock in the woods. Shattered the entire left tube. It was the first day of a week long trip, so I bought some cheapies from Walmart to get me by. I contacted Vortex and I had a new pair waiting for me on my porch when I got home from the trip. These past few years I’ve worked relatively closely with Vortex at my part time gig, and have nothing but positive things to say about their warranty and customer service.

The only complaint I see with vortex is their warranty gets used way too much. It’s great they stand behind their product, but the product shouldn’t fail that often.
I have a couple of vortex items, scopes and binoculars. Haven’t had any issues so far but it’s good they’ll stand behind them.

I wonder if they fail more than other brands or they just have a better warranty so people talk about getting them replaced

A super gear savvy buddy once asked
" Why do you think these places now all have a lifetime warranty?"

"Dunno"

"cause theyre selling it and it comes with some cheap shit optics that they can afford to replace a bunch of times"

This cam after a run around i had with them on a Viper. When zeroed, i was like 3MOA from the end of the turret adjustment. Scope and mounts were square. Even tried it on another. When i called, i spoke with a very intelligent sounding young lady who siad that is within the realm of acceptable. Asked to send it in and got some "it will be a few months before we could look at it". Granted this was at a time when there were only 2-3 hunting podcasts out....but doubt that business model has changed. Yes- i bought more of their stuff and have had good success with it. Tome, there isnt much more damaging than manufacturing flaws leading to contention over warranty boundaries. I will say I had the same with First Lite who is owned by the same company.

When it comes to designs (material choices, etc.), brand protection, and warranty....there is a lot that goes into play from a business decision. It's a fine line to keep costs and quality in check, along with customer experience high, all while protecting the brand.

No matter what I'm buying, I always compare the product, the company, and their warranty. One of them will have to take 3rd, pick your poison. Personally, I prefer to buy once/cry once for a good product and company, hoping to never use the warranty. In this case, if Vortex products work for you and they stand behind their product, then it's a win win. For the cost of the lower lines, the fact it's no questions asked for repair or replacement, it's impressive in today's world!

Meh, sounds like they overcharge people for a shit product. I suppose it okay if you have extras or your aren't serious. It would suck to have problems on a paid hunt. Or have a scope go to shit on a deer of a lifetime. Walmart returns for optics.

What brand do you suggest?

I don't have enough experience in this area to give advice. But since you asked, I would suggest a long time name brand. I'd take a used set of Leopold or, something along those lines, on a paid hunt before Vortex. I just don't think these will ever fit into the "tried and true" category.

I have been satisfied with my Nikon Monarch glass. I trashed a pair in a 4 wheeler incident a bunch of years ago. The current pair I use just aren't what they used to be or technology has caught up. So I plan to send them back to see what they do for me. They gave me Nikon credit for the pair I destroyed. If they did that again I could get a of the top grade Monarch series. Both sets I have/had are the original series when they started it 15+ years ago.

Last I looked they had them on sale for 20% off. Puts them on the same price point as Vortex. But if you want to step up, you gotta dig up that old coffee can. This is for sure an area that you get what you pay for.

Definitely get what you pay for up to a point and then the law of diminishing returns jumps in.

I have vortex crossfire, diamondback and razor scopes, the razor is by far the best but is it worth 3x the price over the diamondback.....ehhh maybe?
