Warming your battery up

It has to do with electron speed, and the conductivity of the battery cable material -

If v t h {\displaystyle v_{th}} v_{{th}} is defined as the most probable speed, then

v t h = 2 k B T m {\displaystyle v_{th}={\sqrt {\frac {2k_{B}T}{m}}}} v_{{th}}={\sqrt {{\frac {2k_{B}T}{m}}}}.

If v t h {\displaystyle v_{th}} v_{{th}} is defined as the root mean square of the total velocity (in three dimensions), then

v t h = 3 k B T m {\displaystyle v_{th}={\sqrt {\frac {3k_{B}T}{m}}}} v_{{th}}={\sqrt {{\frac {3k_{B}T}{m}}}}.

If v t h {\displaystyle v_{th}} v_{{th}} is defined as the mean of the magnitude of the velocity of the atoms or molecules, then

v t h = 8 k B T m π {\displaystyle v_{th}={\sqrt {\frac {8k_{B}T}{m\pi }}}} v_{{th}}={\sqrt {{\frac {8k_{B}T}{m\pi }}}}.

Thanks for the explanation Dan. It makes sense now.

Ummmm, what?

I’ve never heard of this and lived in a much colder place then this. I do turn the key and let the fuel pump cycle first though, maybe that does the same thing.

I never have J...

Ford guys wouldn't have to since as soon as they turn the key, power is sent to that heated tail gate (standard) so their hands don't get cold pushing the bitch... lol

I was waiting for a post like this lmao.... That’s hilarious. Lmao

For the record, I tried this trick this morning. No noticeable difference in starting power. If anything it was seemingly worse.

Interesting. Tried googling it and brought in a mixed bag of opinions and people really over thinking the process.

Sounds about right. I'm not saying it doesn't work... Just that I didn't notice a difference. I also realize the difference may not be noticeable at all, considering it's -2 the last couple mornings.

Most of the comments were of the mindset that it’ll kill a battery more so then do it any good.
Some were really technical like the formula that Dan posted, one guy went as far as using a thermometer (digital) and doing it with a .1 degree increase after 30seconds. I’m of the mindset that warming the battery is a misnomer so far as it’s more of a pre shock to what’s coming next, 9-10 and then a whopping 100amps.

But, as there’s always a but. With modern (electronic fuel injection) you’re technically drawing more power then older (pre-fuel injection) vehicles, plus most newer vehicles seem to have the lights come on when unlocked and key turned on as well.

Some were really technical like the bullshit formula that Dan googled up on Wikipedia that has nothing to do with the topic but was thrown out there as a complete diversion posted, one guy went as far as using a thermometer (digital) and doing it with a .1 degree increase after 30seconds. There ya go, fixed it for ya. :smiley_crocodile:
