Well crap...

First off thanks I appreciate it. I've definitely killed bigger, but with only two days left that I could kill a buck in this area I wasn't going to be to picky. Next year I'll be in here again for sure!

Well there's also some bad news. The meat is un-edible. When I found him his hair was already starting to slip, his skin was turning blue, and he was even a bit bloated. I gutted him it didn't smell as bad as I had expected so I assumed he was still good. He was still warm too which also concerned me because of the chances of bacterial growth. I took him to the processor and after skinning him out it was VERY obvious that the meat wasn't fit for consumption.

The shot was in the gut and it came out his hind quarter, but none of the intestines were ruptured. The initial impact was high and I think I nicked the artery which would explain the bright blood I saw while tracking. I'm guessing he was already dead when I started looking for him, but since I lost his blood trail and had to be checked out by 4 pm (actually I was already late and came in at 4:45) I didn't have a choice but to give up the search. He was probably 75 yards away from the last blood in a thicket.

Anyway, he's recovered and while I feel bad about the wasted meat I am thankful to have recovered him.

Yo Chuck! You mentioned keeping your head down somewhere in this thread... Caused me to pay more attention to what I was doing and I'm shooting really well, SO THANKS! :)

Hey, learn from my mistakes! PLEASE!!! LOL!!! I'm telling ya, with trad archery the little things will screw you up every time. Drop your bow arm after the shot and the arrow is going low to the right. Don't anchor in the right spot and your arrow is gonna be high or low. Look up immediately after the shot and your arrow is going left. Aim at the whole deer and you'll over shoot it by a foot!

Believe me, I know! :) I had been peeking apparently, lifting my head on release. You would think these things would be obvious, but sometimes you just don't see the forest for the trees.
