What are you planting this spring?

usually 100 pounds an acre or more..cultipack in and then hit that same acreage with 100 pounds of 12-12-12

Milo, do the deer hit your sunflowers once they mature? The dove fields I planted in past years got absolutely hammered by deer when the sunflowers were 2' or less, but didn't seem to touch them much after that.

they eat them when they are small and then the fall turkey destroy them

im holding off til august just gonna spray and keep the field down til then. i have another spot that i will put the corn, i think it will benifit us more at this other spot anyways.

I got a mix of chicory and rape. The person at the feed place said not to cover the seed, but if I don't the turkey will demolish it.
Any thoughts?
Ride on it with atv to work it in a bit?

The feed company also three in some oats to the mix. Is it too early to plant oats?

corn takes lots of fertilizer...lots...if you dont have a corn planter you will need to till up the ground extremely well and fertilize heavy. of course you will have weed competing for the available nitrogen. You could use Biologic stuff they have that is a mix of corn and beans but you will want to cultipack the hellout of it to be sure you get a good seed depth if you broadcast.

Last year we had our soil tested. Needed lime and fertilizer . I don't know what-all was planted but a little clover was all I could see.We think maybe we planted too soon after s
preading lime and we had a burn out plus planting too late with no rain or green thumb. We are not GIVING UP !

I don't think the turkeys would eat very much, if any at all. There's so much other (better) food available to them right now, I think they'd have to be desparate to resort to some tiny seeds... But hey, I've been wrong before. Ride on it with the ATV, or find a cultipacker... that would be best. Save those oats until late-August or early-September. Oats are most attractive to the deer when they're young... Plant 'em now and they'll be too tall by the time hunting season rolls around.

Definitely hold off on the oats until last minute. We planted ours last year close to the season, August I think. We didn't even want to be on the property disturbing the deer but we were planting. Happened to be perfect timing. They tore those oats up.

Cotty- Flip a coin. I have heard of turkeys walking right down a row of corn and plucking every seed out of the ground. I am sure they wouldn't mind if the seeds were out on top and waiting for them to pick up. Same could be said for most any bird though. On the other hand, they might not mess with them at all.

just saw this...you did not burn anything with lime as it reduces the acid buildup in the soil. you can generally plant clover just about any time but it can get damaged in prolonged drought summer drought and very young plants that do not have an established root system. we only lightly lime our clover plots. we fertilize them 3 times a year. What date did you plant those plots? if you started here soon you could have a healthy viable plot this fall. Clover is higher maintenance so you have to mow and fertilize a lot.

you can plant oats any time but they wont do much good for late hunting..feed store guy is nuts. you need to have good seed to soil contact. what i would tell you is prep the soil and have it ready just before a good rain shower...spread just before the rain and the rain drops and soil disturbance will cover it enough. aif you have access to a cultipacker i would recommend that. if not a roller can help
