What is This ????????

Very neat history of the farm there, that's an incredible story about the bridge beams. Funny how things work out.

As far as the metal bracket, the door closer makes sense. I seem to remember seeing that on a lot of barns that I've redone the doors on or just have been around.

The idea that it kept a barn door that slides makes sense however that would mean there was either another barn or the one in question was located in a different spot in the yard... I wonder if I worked the area w/ a metal detector if it would produce other such hardware. Over the years, we and others have worked the yard area but this may warrant expanding the search. . .

If nothing else it will get you out of the house, get some exercise, and give you something relaxing to do. Heck, you might even find Dan's long lost arrow out there lol.

Base for the trap?

Have you seen any old trap set-ups like that Sam?
OR do you have any old barns that have that track for the door to keep it from swining?
Just wondered because of the age of the family farm, I thought for sure you would know and infact have a picture of one still in use.

No I haven't seen one like it either for a trap or barn door guide. Though I haven't seen many really old traps. The size of the chunk of concrete it's attached to seems extreme for a barn door guide. The concrete makes me think it is a base for something that needed to be solid like the flag pole, play ground equipment or the trap.

Part of the problem of IDing it is that it appears broken. It could be for something we haven't even thought of. One time I had a backhoe putting a new water line into the house and I just skimmed the side of a large buried crock, had dreams this is where my ancestors buried some $$. Dug a little and found it was full of rocks :smiley_confused_vra Ask Dad and he said it was the muffler for the old Delco generator that was used before electricity came down the road. The exhaust pipe ran through the cellar wall into the crock and another ran out of the crock to above ground. Who would of guessed that one?

Jackalope I agree, things today are made to last only a few years. It reminds me of the show American restoration where the star of the show is quoted by saying remember when Americans took pride in what they made? Everything is turning into such cheaply made merchandise aka shit! If you couldn't tell I really drives me crazy!

Ok back to the main topic, I would have to agree with everyone that said it was some sort of footer but my personal favorite is boot scraper haha!
